Something that would shift, say, a 14 - 36 cogset. 1x5 or 1x6 drivetrain.
I've got a ton of SunTour and Shimano stuff from the mid-70s onward (and a 2nd edition Campy Rally); I'm thinking older than that. Doesn't have to be amazing, performance-wise, just functional. Also shouldn't cost a million bucks.

A Huret Duopar will handle a 36 max cog. I don't know of anything older than mid 70s is going to handle even a 34 much less a 36. Without slant or drop parallelogram mechanisms or Huret's dual parallelogram design you just cant handle large rear ranges. Longer cages provide more chain wrap for more range in the crankset but don't handle the main problem of larger rear cogs

Long cage derailleurs aren't very Eroica to begin with, and so far I've been able to stretch the capabilities of short cage examples to my needs. Having said that, I am keeping a few long cage derailleurs for when that dreaded day comes that I'll need bigger gears. Preferably ones that will not look too much out of place on a racing bike, such as a 600 arabesque, Vx GT and Cyclone GT.

Cyclone GT goes to 32T, though some reckon they can go higher.

What's the year cutoff? The first Campagnolo Chorus had a pivoting parallelogram. The part could have the geometry of a NR/SR, or by turning the cage you could have a range rather greater.

Shimano Crane was mid '70s. And there was the Campagnolo boat anchor (I intentionally forget its name) was available in the late '60s, IIRC. FWIIW, I have had an Eco Duopar shift a 50-42-31X16-20-25-30-34-38 and it could handle 50X38 and 31X16.

Oh yes, they're conservative. I have a SunTour Mark II regular cage & their catalog says 26 is its largest cog. I'm easily running up to 32 cogs without issue. You just never know.....

I'm also dreading the day I need more than a short cage.
That said, probably the most Eroica appropriate long cage RD that would look the part would be a modified NR with an alpine jockey cage, preferably home made. A Simplex GT or a Duopar would look the part too, there was always one weirdo on every ride that insisted on the wacky French parts.... Jubilees are cool but I wouldn't take one off road. Too light.
Yeah, sure, Suntour... While they were the dominant long cage derailleur of the 70s to mid 80s, they weren't that popular with the racing set.

The look would best be accomplished with a Stronglight or TA triple on front. SR made some triples with the same 86BCD as the Stronglights.

I went long-cage Simplex RD on my Gitane but I don't run much bigger than a 28t in back - I just didn't trust 45 year old plastic... It looks perfect on a French bike.
I had to go to a Simplex triple on my wife's Gitane to shift a triplized Stronglight 93 crank. The old delrin FD just wasn't up to the task.
It's not entirely Eroica, but you could do a triplized front crank and get a replacement long-cage for a Campy NR RD. Have you seen Robert Freeman's work on that?
