Crazy Historical Pinarello for sale on ebay

Looking at pictures on Pinterest, I stubbled across a picture of Miguel Indurain. I wondered what size frame he rode, so I searched Google, which returned Miguel Indurain Pinarello Banesto original Tour bicycle 1994 Campagnolo Record for sale.

You have to check the “Buy Now“ price for this 1994 ride. Seems a little low-brow to sell on ebay? I’d make an offer, but I’m sure it would be insulting. Maybe someone rich among us can buy it and share about it on the Forum.😉

saw this a while back. bike would be a blast to ride (it's my size) but there are only a handful of people alive worthy enough to ride that bike.
i'm among the millions that can appreciate it.

it's a museum piece. a work of art. it should never be ridden again.

I just want the saddle. Best daggum saddle ever made. Of course, I will take the whole thing if I have to.

Some billionaire will buy it and take it to a shop and have it converted to a flat bar fixie for his son and that will be the end of that.

It is an odd phenomenon. People willing to pay enourmous sums of money to own a part of the past where they were only a spectator at best.

I don't think bikes with prices like this sell very often, no matter what the provenance.

Wouldn't call it a phenomenon as it's quite regular behavior. Just look at what people have paid for movie and music memorabilia.

That’s the phenomenon. There has always been collecting, but I’m not sure when it started en masse. There is such high value placed on someone‘s rookie card, or guitar.

Now the historical value is high when presented in a museum to demonstrate an accomplishment from particular era and the technology used in that era. That is fascinating.

I wonder who could tell the difference between this bike and the domestique’s. I’m sure some could tell. I haven’t followed the differences.

Agreed. I swear someone posted a link to this same listing a year or two ago on this forum.

I was curious how long this has been on sale, so I just Googled, Miguel Indurain bikes for sale. I see a time trial bike was for sale a while back. I read the details of the eBay description, where a lady won It at a charity event, and when she passed, it was eventually returned. Couldn’t really tell how long it’s been listed though. I’ll have to watch if the price will drops.

Best example I can think of to demonstrate how our culture has tacked on artificial value is the Bullitt mustang.

Car might have been scrapped, but the studio sold it for $3500 and it was used as a daily driver. Fifty years later is sells for $3.4M. In the mid-70’s no one gave a .... about the car. And then it becomes the most iconic mustang ever.

People love to make things larger than life. I hope future generations get off this collectibility merry-go-round.

Too many people with too much money trying to buy their memories.

EDIT: Though I confess that I was really excited when my company moved our lab facility to a site overlooking the corner of Hill and Guadalupe Canyon, where the Bullitt chase ended in a big fiery explosion....
