Simplex Downtube Shifters-a washer is missing?
Below is a picture of the Simplex Downtube Shifters from my Peugeot PFN10. As you can see I seem to be missing a small plastic washer from the right side. It seems to be made. of some kind of plastic. Is it critical to have this washer? What kind of plastic is it? Can I get it from a hardware store? Do I have these lined up in the proper order? Are these the Criterium model?

Thanks Chombi. Your diagram helped.
I installed the shifters without the little washer on the left hand side. I found out that The Simplex shifters need Campagnolo cables. I will use the other shifter cables with Some Suntour Barcons on the Tempo
The PFN10 is back together again and is shifting pretty well front and rear. A little fine tuning and maybe some new bar tape and it will be done.
Pictures in an upcoming thread.

I'm puzzled..?
my Peugeot came with Simplex black plastic DT levers
following 'lots' of arm twisting here, , i hunted down an old set of banded Simplex levers on eBayUK
and, with a bit of component swapping , made up an alloy set
looking at your pic, the small tabs appear to be bent at a slight angle
however.............
i had to [gulp] bend mine to 90deg so that they provided a 'stop' to prevent the levers rotating too far forward
.
am i missing something..?...........................john

I mounted my tabs so that they fit in between the two "teeth" on the part to the left that fits over the braze on.

You need to fiddle with them so they end up in the correct position towards the front of the bike to catch the levers when they are thrown forward to shift to the highest gears. Either you just need to just re-clock them correctly over the square portion of the shifter bosses on the frame, or you might also have the sides switched.....

I remember having the same problem with those shifters. They rotated too far forward. I assumed they were a mismatch to the bosses and gave up on them. Simplex was never consistent with their shifter bosses, either brazed or banded.
Chombi is right in number 6. That keeps them from rotating.
Those shifters can be polished up beautifully and you can add paint for a nice effect.

I think I figured out why you guys have a problem with the shifters going too far forward.......
Notice the position of the bent leg on this set, in relationship to the square holes.....
Now notice how the one on my set below, that came from my Peugeot PSV is different....
The levers will hit the leg earlier on the washers from my set. Not sure why other sets will have the leg at a different position, maybe they were meant for a set that goes on the stem with a stem clamp-on band?....

firstly
sorry to highjack your thread vonfilm - thought we could learn from my mistakes.!
second .. thanks for the pics chombi - it seems i have different items
third - apologies for late response - been chasing down reports of a Peugeot for sale in the Village - and as i live in rural Scotland - such chances don't come often.
Owner visiting tonight - i have no car - so fingers crossed...............anyway
because i bought a 'banded' lever, i have a mishmash of parts - but it was a cheap way to get alloy levers
the original setup came with a front chrome 'Simplex' plate (5) which has an oblong hole
.
which fits over a 'peg' on the frame mounted backing plate
this plate has a 'cable guide hole' so guess it can only be mounted as shown
.
my bits - as installed
you can see that the 'shoulder' on the original plastic lever rotated to hit the tab on the backing plate (1) - thus fixing the forward location - by fitting alloy levers [without said shoulder] the lever can rotate 360deg
so.........
by adding the disc (4) with its tab bent 90deg i have provided a 'stop'
it works when the tension is 'tight' just remembering to push the lever forward till resistance is felt otherwise it will be pushed too far
... apologies for the waffle.................time for another espresso
ride fast - stay safe......................................john
