Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is broken pelvis a "common" roadie injury?

In June I went over the bars on my 31-mile most common route. Broken pelvis (small fracture). At my yearly cancer doctor visit, my doc's immediate question was: "Did you do it cycling?" She said she'd known several cyclists who had broken their pelvis.

Is breaking the pelvis fairly common? I hadn't heard of it, and I don't see why that would logically be true (at least on road bikes - I can imagine it being more common on MB riding). This is just idle curiosity.

FWIW, the doctors tell me my bones are healthy, but I'm 71 so I know that's relative to old people. I have had a knee replaced (worn out, I ran distance until I was 55) and my hip replaced (broke it riding, got distracted and hit a high curb). When I went over the bars in June, I also got a concussion with memory loss for 1-3 minutes before and after. First, the concussion means I have zero memory of what caused the accident - I know exactly where it happened, I know the surface, I've walked the stretch and searched. No damage to the bike or wheels. Second, it made me think about repeated concussions, and I realized I've had concussions with the short memory loss twice in the past: high school football and motorcycle accident at 20. So the NFL concussion discussion has raised my awareness, because I had never thought about that before.

I was talking to a roadie just a couple weeks ago who crashed due to a front blowout and had a broken pelvis and a compound fracture of the elbow.

Not nearly as common as a collarbone (clavicle) fracture.

But not uncommon. Might even be in second place.

I am pretty sure the science/studies have already been done. Google "most common cycling injuries presenting to emergency room." I am pretty sure road rash/abrasions is number one. But for fractures, I am pretty confident that a pelvic fracture is a distant second to collarbone. I would love to do the literature search right now, but I have to go for a ride.

In 20+ years I've seen broken collarbones, femurs, scapulas, wrists, fingers, but never a pelvis (except when hit by a car).

Want to say clavicle, arms/elbow/wrist and hips/femur are more common than a pelvis.
Wishing any one with a recent fracture to get better quickly and be patient.

Old thread I know - recovering from concussion and fractured pelvis - pubic bone in 2 locations - corpus superior and corpus inferior. - hit deep pot hole while riding relaxed on spinachi bars. Hard fall on right side. Impact on hip fractured pubic bones. I'm 66. Speed was 17mph. 3 weeks ago minus a day. Yesterday I was able to take several steps without crutches. Yow !

I took a spill on April 11th and fractured my right hip and a concussion. I'm doing much better right now and walked about a mile yesterday. I won't be riding for a while but more related to dealing with prostate issue.

I broke my pelvis in three places a few years ago. Oil slick around a tight turning circle... slip bam body-slam; no time to put my arm out and break my collar bone. (if I hadn't been wearing my helmet... )

Broke 7 ribs in another crash.
Got hit by a minivan once and broke my shoulder blade. X-ray revealed I had broken my collarbone years earlier and healed just fine but I don't know when that would've been... probably not a bike accident though.

Clavicles #1 . Arm, hand, wrist injuries next though with so many bones there, pelvis may well rank above any particular one, maybe even all individually. Ribs are in there too.

I've hit the "corner" of my hip hard and suffered 18 months of bursitis several times. Haven't broken it yet. Each time I get reminded of my bike racing mantra, "hit the road with everything you've got", ie elbow, knee, shoulder, ankle, hip and all the skin available. The more you spread it out, the faster you heal and them better the chance you can ride home and keep training.

Displaced acetabular with dislocated hip last year and healing up now here, from the knee hitting and the femur breaking out the back of the pelvis. Bicycle, and added to a few other face and larynx crunchies, but not the collar bone this time!

Wow, that's lucky - collarbone is meant to be painful as hell. I've seen a hard man do one (off a bike, come to think of it) and cry like a little kid.

My wife broke her pelvis in three places a couple years ago from a bike crash and the docs said it was common in cycling, motorcycling and horse riding accidents.

I had exactly that too, probably from landing onto the edge of the curb there. Interestingly, I was treated at Boulder Community, and they said it was a rare cycling injury despite having treated a lot of cyclist crashes. Seems more common than I thought from what this thread is saying.

Slow motion clip less fail, front wheel caught cracked pavement during slow roll up to intersection. Newton law of motion took over and slammed me to the ground.
Rode ten miles home, it hurt, but I thought I was ok. 2 days later I could barely walk, X-ray was in conclusive, but doc said likely. 6 week recovery

Close on the pelvis fracture a few years ago, but just ended up with a deep bone bruise that took more than a year to heal. Still dealing with getting full range of motion on that side. If you think about it, it’s a prime spot for the initial impact with the road.
