32c on WABI Classic vs WABI Thunder

I have both a Wabi Classic and Thunder. While the Thunder will fit 50c tires, the Classic has room for 32's on the regular "lightweight" wheels. But how would the wider rims do with 32c tires on the Classic? Well here you go.
32c GP5000's on the Classic Lightweight rims measure 29mm wide.
32c Gatorskins on the Thunder CX wheels measure 33mm wide.

32c Gatorskins Front Wabi CX wheels on Classic

32c Gatorskins Rear Wabi CX wheels on Classic

As far as ride goes, the CX with Gatorskins are heavier, but not obtrusively so. About .5-1 mph slower on a 17 mile ride. Though they feel more solidly planted, smoother and give me a more surefooted feel.

The GP5000s do are more spritely and are very comfortable as well. Obviously faster.

Yes, indeed, wider rims will make tires wider.

my experience is that a wider rim makes a tire taller.
think of it as a tire being a circle.
the rim is a chunk of the circumference.
You add to the chunk with a wider rim.
the circumference is now larger.
ergo - the diameter is bigger- tire is taller.

2¢. Don’t spend it all at once

Actually, it is the opposite. As the rim gets wider, it forces the tire apart, which pulls the tire down and makes it shorter. The tire surface does not change, so it is forced to span a greater distance across the rim.

there is a difference similar to the width. The Gatorskins (iirc) were 30 or 31 mm high on the wider rim while the GP5000S were 29mm on the current set up.

I should probably move the Gatorskins to the Classic wheels and get a true comparison as you suggested.

welp - as stevel610 mentioned, he should probably get a true comparison using his set up.

the taller tire experience: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/f...c.php?t=130878
the wider tire experience: https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?p=2411702
-- the point in the second link being: " it depends on the tire and rim. But generally going from skinny to wider adds width and height, but the height figure goes down after a certain point."

.... I think I got myself all irritated when I said in my note "my experience" - and I then I read - "Actually, it's the opposite" -- .... like someone telling me I didn't experience what I experienced and I must be delusional.
it's not you, it's me. I let myself get irritated by the internets.... again. But - I must say, this is a better thread than those AI-ChatBot threads going in the Touring section !! haha! (for the record, I am not a ChatBot)

ride safe out there. please.

Sorry if I irritated you, it was not my intention. If you put a wide tire on a narrow rim, such that it is severely lightbulbed, then indeed it will get taller when moved to a wider rim. However, if you put a narrow tire on a narrow rim, then it will get shorter when moved to a wider rim. In the OP’s case, the 32mm tires are really too wide for the narrow rims on the Wabi Classic, and will be both wider and taller on the Wabi Thunder rims.

Peace out - TT

You can fit 32s with a wider rim, but it will be tight. We mount 32mm Continentals on Archetypes (~18mm internal width vs. 12.6mm internal widths of Lightweights) on Classics. It is right at the rear brake caliper, but it works. Continental tend to run a little "small" on height so not sure it will clear with all tires.

I'm running a 32c Gatorskin SS on the rear of my Classic. It's mounted on a Pacenti Brevet (19mm inside) and measures close to 32mm width. I don't have any direct measure of the tire height but there's not more than 6mm room to the brake bridge. I can't see any caliper fitting in there but for most fixed riders there's no need. I've also run a 32c Pasela on a Mavic MA-2 in that rear with no problem.

Amend that last post to be Gravelking rather than Gatorskin. Small fonts in the wee hours with aged eyes.

Measured today with calipers:
Thunder Wheels
32 Gatorskins measure 1.31" or 33.27mm
32 GP5000 measure 1.22"-1.28" which = 31mm and 32.5 mm

Classic Wheels
32 Gatorskins both 1.22" which = 31mm
32 GP5000 measure 1.19" / 1.20" which = 30.23mm / 30.5mm
