Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our VA trip to visit the grandparents is coming up. I was thinking that I'd leave the bike at home and rent, but two fiddy for a 'meh' bike is the cheapest that I'm coming up with. If that's the case, attaching the rooftop box and hauling my bike is looking more attractive.

Should we meet in the middle and drag Dan333SP out for a bike ride? He'll probably try to make some excuse about taking care of his offspring or something, though.

Worth considering, if it's not too cold and you guys are willing to wait around for an old crumb.

Just aim for some hills then you two can wait for me.

Yeah, weather is the other part of the equation. I'll be keeping an eye on the 10-day as we get closer to leaving - mostly above freezing and not too much precip is all that I ask for.

I like watching someone who flagrantly disregards parking regulations get a ticket. Some people apparently don't realize that the parking authority is out in force in the area around my building.

A nickel says they have a few grand in unpaid fines already.

The local fed cops once frog marched one of our employees out of the building for parking unpaid tickets. Story was he was working another job in the middle of the day (fireable on its own) and could never find legit parking on campus when he came back in the afternoons. That day, he put his 3-series in the the spot reserved for the director of a 30 billion/yr federal agency, which finally got some attention.

It's cold here too. 54 for the high so the awesome Marigold jacket will be called upon to perform its magic.
It only made it 46 F yesterday so I did not ride. I accept the shame and ridicule I deserve.
Sad.

Speaking of authorities, one of the guys on Sunday's ride (where we got chewed out for seemingly violating the 2-abreast law) went to complain to the police dept earlier this week and he got this reply from the chief of police....notice the chief does not state we were in the right, but he did apologize for the nastiness:

'I would also like to apologize for my officer’s demeanor on that date and hope that his actions will not dissuade you or your group from enjoying your pastime on our roadways here in East Coventry Township.''I would also like to apologize for my officer’s demeanor on that date and hope that his actions will not dissuade you or your group from enjoying your pastime on our roadways here in East Coventry

Did they make you put that big Matrix sticker on the TT?

"We really need to hype our rims this year!"

Or maybe it doesn't say Matrix. I can't find the "Enhance" button.

Speaking of the '80s, I still haven't found the perfect car to drive when the minivan isn't called for. Kinda tempted by this Pulsar cuzza the sweet upholstery

Of course my next step in the process is looking up youtube videos. The commercial almost clinches it for me...

I got a CatEye back in probably '86. The thing was so big you could see it from space. One fine Friday afternoon during my final semester of college (I had no classes on Fridays.) I was hammering away on a MUP. Riding my Maruishi. Looked down to mess with the computer and drifted to the left. Flew over a drainage pipe cutout on the trail surface. Hit the other end and went over the bars as the bike bounced backwards from the impact. Landed on my right shoulder and rolled. No helmet but never hit my head. Bent the downtube just behind the headtube. Toptube slightly pulled away from the headtube but still attached.

I was a good 16 miles from campus. Bike was difficult to ride. Made my way slowly until I hit the first hill. Ended up hitching a ride with a florist delivery van. Guy took me almost to the shop, which was on my route home, but he had to kick me out so he didn't get in trouble with his boss. Had to make my way home from there as I had no money for a cab. At least the computer survived, and lesson learned. Upgraded to a used Trek 660 with Camp Nuovo drivetrain and Modolo brakes with aero levers.
