To each his/her own I guess.

No gel seat, but all of my bike shorts have padding. Some are thin, some relatively thick. They all seem to work about the same.

Bike jerseys work well for me. The pockets are handy for carrying phones or cameras, they're cool, block uV, and don't flap around much.

I rode for years with gym shorts and t-shirts, though. They worked for me too ... just not as well.

Me too. I have only a few long sleeve jerseys. I've ditched short sleeve jerseys in favor of modern synthetic T shirts. I find them cooler, lighter, cheaper, quicker drying and they have no zippers to fail. I've also gotten a little chubby and found that most jerseys cling uncomfortably to the mid section and make me feel chubbier.

Wallet, phone, glasses, windbreaker and snacks go into top tube and trunk bags. I never use a backpack on tour so stuffing those items into a rear jersey pocket seems old school. Can't reach back there now anyway.

Heh! Now that I've ditched both the padded tights and jersey I guess I'll have to change my user name to FredG! (No offense to any real Freds out there!)

It's interesting that most in this thread who don't like jerseys because they are too hot are from the north - New Hampshire, NYC, Ontario and so forth.

Most in this thread from the southern regions such as Southern California, Georgia and South Carolina wear jerseys.

I haven’t gotten any jerseys, yet. I keep looking but size is an issue and also the cut. I prefer loose t-shirts to form fitting. I have a handlebar bag so no need for pockets. I have some Nike Dri-fit tops which are nice except when I want to wipe the sweat from my face and the synthetic fabric just slides around the moisture.

I've always felt the same way about fit. I've had jerseys from Performance, Pearl Izumi, Voler, and Zoic that fit comfortably. I like a little room for the gut and I don't like anything tight under the arms. I'm 6'2" and 210# and I look for XXL in a "club fit".

I guess if it's warm out anything that wicks will work. When it's cold I wear a base layer with a winter jersey and I love having the rear pockets for extra layers, etc.

I've also gotten a little chubbier over the years. Chubby people deserve to be comfortable, though.
