Trek 930 turning into a commuter.

I'm turning my old Trek 930 into an everyday commuter. First thing I did was remove the Manitou fork and in stall the OEM Trek fork. Also installed a new head set. Next will be to put some road tires/slicks, new shifters, and handle bars.

I would like to keep the grip shifters but I have CTS in both hands. I need grips that will relieve the presure in my hands. I cannot find grips like this for my SRAM shifters. I also need to change the stem to 90mm.

Sure, just pick up a HubBub twist shifter adapter: https://www.hubbubcustom.com/store/products.asp?id=32

I wouldn't do it myself, but it is certainly possible.

Oddly, the very first Grip Shifters were made to use as barend shifters on drop bars.

You can always head to Wal-Mart and try out a GMC Denali.

Yours reminds me of my 930. I never could get comfortable on it so I sold it.

I hope I do not have that problem. I used my 930 for trails only. I stopped ridding it in 2000. I'll be putting some 5" riser handle bars on it very soon.

There's an active thread in the C & V forum on drop bar MTB conversions. My next project is to convert my 1992 Trek 950 to drops.

I did that conversion to a '93 Trek 7000 MTB a few years ago and it was cost-effective only because I had a lot of surplus parts that I could use and was content with components (brifters, bars, stems, etc.) that were several generations out of date.

I just took my 930 for a 5 mile ride. I think all I need are some ergo grips for my twist shifters, New cables all around, and some road tires and maybe some riser handlebars. The fork really felt nice. I do not miss the Manitou 3 fork one bit.

Had one of those too.
Great for off road. I found that it's smallish frame geometry and generally solid feel allowed me to toss it around more than most guys could on sprung bikes. Also a great hill climber.
Set it up as a commuter and it sucked. It just felt too cramped and rode like a rock.

I just replaced the stem, handle bars, grips, shift cables, tires and brake cables. My 930 is more comfortable to ride now. I just need to tweek the front derailleur. The tall gear is hard to shift up to but all other shifting is smooth. Fenders and a rear rack are next.

I just tweeked my front and rear derailleur and tightend and trued the wheel/spokes.. I also installed some Specialized Nimbus Sport tires 26"X1.5. The ride is much better now. I'll ride the bike for a few days and adjust everything as needed. I'm sure the new shift/brake cables will need tweeking. Next I will install my tire pump and lighting.

I actually did the same thing, and I cannot recommend the Wald 867 handlebars enough. The swept back bar does a lot to make up for the longer top tube, plus it gives a great position for city riding.

Just got back from a work out with my 930. Shifting is smooth and crisp. Braking is excellent. The wheels are still true and the music from the spokes is gone since I adjusted. After a few rides I will give everything a once over. The 80psi 26x1.5 tires are working great so far, very smooth ride. The only pain I have now is from being out of shape and not from the bicycle. I need to now work on my shifting. It's been at least 10 years since I've been out riding a real bicycle. I keep shifting in too low a gear on the hills and burning my legs out. Shifting skills may also be caused by me being out of shape.

Looks like it's from the same era as my Trek 730, back when they had all of those "ice" colors. Your 930 might even be the same "ice green" as my 730. When I first got into adult bicycling in 1995, Trek was it (along with Specialized & up and coming Cannondale) and I've had a soft spot for the brand and especially for those 90's bikes ever since. I look forward to seeing your progress on this project.

Your correct. I bought my Trek 930 back in 1995.

I still have my 930 that I purchased in 1997. It's an awesome bike. I set it up for touring by adding a front and rear rack to hold panniers and bull-horn bar extensions. The only other change I made was putting on different tires that would make it a decent commuter. Don't use it much anymore, but can't being myself to selling it.

So ... when I purchased it, it was classified as a "mountain bike", just without the then couple-years new front suspension, (rear suspensions were not even conceived yet). The same bike today, my 930 ... would it be called a "hybrid" bike?
