I sat out most of June and all of July ( lucky for you guys).

Thankfully, I read that the 90*F temps are all behind us Seattle area residents.
Prayers for all being threatened by wildfires.

Pub content = Stay thirsty my friends.

edit: This was my ride through the TdF. Just call me Mr. Poseur, i’ll drink to it.

Re-read post #1 and this Sticky is supposed to be about chit-chat. I’m not good at social chit-chat, but here’s my cycling version.
Got the pictured bike worked over by some real pro’s at a C&V gathering. Wheels and drivetrain dialed-in to the millimeter. Now every time I hop on another of my bikes, if it gives me any chit-chat - I get very annoyed.

YMMV
It’s been mostly a lonely summer at my personal Pub67. Not a bad thing, really. But no intentions of shuttering the place. The best Holidays are ahead of us with the days getting noticibly shorter.

Any corkscrew collectors in the Pub?

Somewhere packed away, I have a few cocktail shakers from 40s or 50s.

Drying peppers in the sun...

Now the question is, how many does it take for a dozen pickled eggs. I can tell you those tiny guys are gum-numbing hot!

A pepper expert.
I told the wife she should pick her yellow pepper months ago. Ignoring my advice she let it grow. Do they get hotter with more time on the vine?

Supposed to be about like a pepperoncini… if so, Jalapeños are 5 to 16x hotter on the Scoville heat scale and these habaneros could up to 160x hotter than than.

Hopefully still enough sun to dry these before the weather gets colder...

Sounds like time for a beer - to go with those peppers.
Or a glass of milk, to cool the heat.

Comments welcome. i may edit this post more than a couple of times.

The purpose of the post is to help me understand the handling characteristics of a particular bike. An early 70s Zeus brazed in Erbil, Spain - deep in the Basque region. Look at attached pics and tell me if you think this fork curvature is different from most on a (vintage lightweight) sport/racing bike. And would it yield a more 'touring' feel in the front end steering? Or is it just a French (+Basque) design? Would the unknown (to me) fork material be responsible for perceived ride(main tubes are 531)? Or should I just ride a wider range of bicycles and not obsess over any outliers.
Zeus

And here is a fork bend, also from the early 70s, that may deliver a different feel than the Zeus.

Hmmmnn... maybe the 2 pics below show the difference between fork bends better.

And below is my early 70s French touring frame, tho a slightly larger size. The Follis has a bend more like the Bottechia in my estimation.

The first key point about these forks is to compare their offsets - the distance from the wheel axle center to the projection of the steering axis, measured perpendicular to the steering axis. Second is the steering axis angle from either perpendicular or horizontal. Those two parameters plus the wheel diameter let you calculate trail, which is a key indicator for bike handling. The radius of curvature and the outer diameter of the fork blade where it is curved are key to estimating ride quality. It also is affected by tubing wall thickness, but I'm not sawing apart any vintage forks to find that answer.

Useful calculator for 'ya--

Bicycle Trail Calculator | yojimg.net

With 25s all around my rig is a fairly generous (by modern standards), 60 mm of trail (57-59 seems to be what is most commonly seen on modern road bikes). Interestingly, with 28s all around my rig calculates to 61mm, which leads me to believe it may be as much as 62 with a 28 only on the front leaving a 25 tire on the rear. Some bikes from the legendary era may go higher but >63 would be unusual for most bikes.

These days most of us are not looking for trail higher than 60, rather for lower.

The hard part in all this is to measure the offset. How did you get the offset? Yojimg did not have a database of fork offsets in his utility.

Going to the link for the calculator above, you provide the offset for your OEM fork. According to the geo chart, my rig has a head tube angle of 72.5° and that with a 45mm offset and 25mm tires results in a trail of 60mm.

Going to 28 tires results in a trail of 61.

Interestingly, staying with 25s but having a head tube angle of 72.4° also is a trail of 61.

So I'm just reckoning that keeping a 25 on the rear and putting a 28 on the front would be something like 28s all around with a head tube angle of 72.4° ... resulting in a trail of 62.

Whatever it may be, I like the idea of more rather than less trail as I have a higher seat because the bike has shorter cranks and elevated handlebars with aerobars and it seems like the higher trail should give a more stable ride in the aero position. In any event, I don't seem to have any handling problems.

Winter cross training.
The PNW got lucky with some dry, rideable days in January. So many, in fact, I went for a hike in the neighborhood, instead of a 5th consecutive day of riding.
Lot’s of blowdown still across trails after a couple of weeks.

Blowdown across the trail

And a nice sunset to cap it off

Just returned from looking at a new car. Man, don't ever try to just take a look at a new car on the last day of the month. Apparently they didn't believe me when I said just want to try not buy. I felt a little violated. I hate the high pressure sales b.s. The up side being that I realized my current ride, a 2011 forester, works just fine thank you. Just add a bit of oil now and then and we're good to go.

It's a new year. Thought I'd stop in at our Pub, empty for 10 months, but not boarded up..

I'm guilty of drinking less in 2019.
Isn't the Pub the place where we exaggerate our prior successes and likewise our future exploits?
2019 was a great year and I hope to ride a bicycle on Mars in the future.

Cheers. And a good new year to all who enter here.

Does your membership in Pub51 ever expire? Mine is 20 years old now. Do I have to renew it?

No membership required.
But nothing more boring than an empty Pub.
Maybe we need a Smoking Lounge?
