Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Probably the added weight of the new helmet just crushed your rims. Frame will go next.

Wow, someone for me to comiserate with. I haven't gone down yet, but I have been spending tons of cash trying to get my bike to fit me right and replacing parts that are breaking because the previous owner didn't treat it very well. Hope you like your new wheels better.

Well, the bunny-hop was probably the last straw, but the spokes were on their last legs anyway. Loose spokes puts a lot of stress on a few spokes at a time as the wheel turns, rather than all of them at once. So they undergo zero tension up to super-high tension, then back down to tension again. This wears them out due to fatigue very quickly and they're be prone to snapping. The jump and impact was the last bit of load needed to snap them.

At this point, your only real sure thing is to re-build the wheel with all new spokes. And have them tensioned towards the high-end of the range. Depending upon how far of the rim is, you might need a new one of those too...
