Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What I'm wondering, and obviously no one can judge this case without seeing the bars, is how one draws the line between bars that look aged, and bars that could fail. This wasn't on my radar until I talked to the mechanic on the phone.

I don't race but it's a blast riding a mountain bike in mud and snow.

Why don't you go look at it? If they're just a little discolored that's one thing, but if there is significant corrosion you should probably buy new bars.

I will. Just trying to get a general understanding of the problem so I can discuss it more intelligently.

On that front, the other issue is the mystery noise (and suspected spinning resistance). ls01 suggested it might be the free hub which seemed possible to me. The mechanic said he looked at it and it was OK except I think he said they replaced a spring. He hadn't test ridden it yet. Should I press him more on this? One thing I noticed about the noise--it got worse several miles into the ride (why?), so it may be hard to replicate in the shop.

Here is my friend working the sand pit. He's a fan of single speeds. I went mountain biking with him and he was on a single speed and kicked my butt.

SMH.

Between work and weather I'm stuck doing this.
Edit: I never stopped but it says I wasn't moving for exactly 2 minutes. Weird.

I've even ridden road bikes with 23s in a bit of sand. Not like the pic above but still..

Unless it’s overwhelming, the danger is not from surface oxidation, but crevice corrosion. Any scratch can become a site for crevice corrosion, which will eventually eat through the metal and weaken it significantly. I broke a Campy Record crank arm that way and he same thing brings sailboat rigs down all the time. A careful cleaning and inspection with a magnifying glass are in order...or recycle them.

3 of us rode 60 miles today with a stop for a slice on pizza. I went first and asked for pepperoni and when she brought it out, it was cheese pizza. Rather than complain I took it outside and started devouring. My friend Bob asked for cheese and she told him she had given the last slice to me. My friends told her they had heard me ask for pepperoni.
It all worked out and it was a nice day with a bit of wind. I got pretty tired and couldn't stay with them on the late climbs. Longest ride in a while. Getting old sucks.

datlas will be happy to know that I've decided to talk to my doctor about this whole bee/wasp sting immunity treatment thingy. Of course, the bad news is that, months after being stung in the hip, I'm getting occasional flare ups in the same area. Just small welts and only itchy enough to call attention to themselves, but still concerning to me, given the time that's passed. I really don't want to swell up like Violet Beauregarde the next time I get stung.

I have to go there to figure out what's going on. Phone conversation was confusing. He said they had a set in the shop, which they may or may not have already put on the bike.
