Early 80s Pinarello Record - New Winter Project

I just picked up this early 80s Pinarello Record (I think, from the BB cutouts) as a restoration project. I've been looking for a Pinarello project since completing the clean-up and rebuild of my Montello (https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...tello-slx.html). For sentimental reasons (and being in Spummoni paint), I left it as I rode it in the early 90s. This one is getting a full strip, repaint, re-decal, and rebuild with Nuovo Record parts.

I bought it from the second owner. It was originally red, but he sprayed it black. It looks (from the missing patch on the downtube) to be fully chrome underneath. Once I strip it and assess the chrome, I may leave it that way for now, black labels, and maybe do a chromovelato finish on it. Otherwise, I'm not sure what color but probably something dark, with white labels, and bare chrome on fork and stays (more like a Montello).

It came with MA-40s on 600 hubs, which I'll be using, and GP-4s on Record, which I won't. Nostalgically, the Specialized tires on the MA-40s were the same ones that came on the Montello when I bought it - they were dried out in 92 when I bought the Montello - imagine what these looked and felt like after 30 years. Ditto, the SI Turbo saddle (which I found miserably uncomfortable back then and will be replacing with a Flite or Astute)

I have an 84 Nuovo rear derailleur on its way from ebay. I might use the 87 Chorus levers that came off my Montello instead of the Modolos on this bike. The freewheels are both 6-speed with 19s, which wont work for me. I have a cheap 7 speed with 25 on order just to get it running. I'm not sure what to do with the crankset - the inner ring is a Campy 42. The drilled outer 52 looks to have no marking. In any event, the bolts were installed from the inside so I need to re-assemble it correctly. Thinking about a compact Stronlight Impact as is on my Montello.

Never having done a restoration such as this, I'm happy to get comments/advice/criticism. At some point I'm sure I'll have some tech questions (although my searches online so far have usually brought me to threads here that addressed it)

How about a pic of the BB from the bottom side. Is there a chain bridge?

There is. A Montello doesnt have one but a Treviso or Record does.

Serial Number D907 (I had to strip the paint to even read it). The BB looks like its fully chromed.

I'm less sure about the main tubes. They may just be lightly sanded to make the paint adhere

My paint stripping tools:

Followed by a wipe with WD-40 on paper towel to remove the residue. This was more curiosity to see what I was up against. Turns out not much - think hot knife through butter. I'll strip off the components and get to work in earnest next week.

The chrome is pretty rusty - lots of little spots. Tin foil and WD-40 make quick work of it. Clean vs rusted:

Hi,

Nice catch! D907 - I think this is a last generation Super Record made in late 1984.
On my Prestige, I also found that the chrome was less glitter under the paint. I think the steel under the chrome wasn't polished mirror glossy there. On the one hand, the economy is on the other hand due to better adhesion of the paint. I've been thinking about cromovelato too, but I think the quality under the paint is low to the cromovelato.I would rather recommend the colors of the first half of the decade for this frame, including maybe the Pinarello's more metallized candy colors too.

I'll defer to painting experts... but won't WD40 leave a ton of oily residue? [Automotive] Brake disc cleaner would be better at removing all residue, or possibly rubbing alcohol?

No question it's leaving a mess. but it's just temporary to protect the base metal. at some point after all the components are off and the paints been removed I'll wipe everything down with acetone and make sure everything is removed.

I'm not an expert, but I know so after the brake disc cleaner, you'll never be able to paint anything. In our neighborhood nightly jealous husbands pour it to car's paint of enthusiastic lovers.

I have a Pinarello, serial D933 (whatever that means).
Mine is most certainly late 1984.
Not a Montello SLX.
Chrome stays.
I believe (but am not 100% certain) that the Record model had painted stays, the SuperRecord model had polished chrome + chrome fork..
Mine is definitely an SL tubeset and quick as a rocket, but not original nor pristine. Which will be resolved in due time.

Have fun with the restoration.
Keep the thread updated periodically.

This is my 84-85 Pinarello Record serial# X375. It has painted stays and fork, it's chrome underneath the paint on the frame. Yours may be a Super Record .

Hi,

I'd like to ask, what information you have about '84 -'85? The pump peg and second bottle cage holes vs.the single letter in serial number make age determination exciting.
