Garmin Speed sensor 2 - cumulative distance?

Is there an app, a data field or a clever hack that will compute a running total of distance, ideally a counter that can be reset manually. I'd like to use this sensor as an odometer, the idea being to schedule maintenance.

The sensor itself has no memory it just counts and regularly sends that count to the head unit. If you have a Garmin cycling computer it should have the total distance under History / Totals. On my Edge 800 there are per bike odometers under settings / bike profiles menu. I don't know if the newer units without bike profiles still provide a breakdown. Strava also shows total distance for each bike if you have multiple bikes set up and set the bike for each activity.

In Garmin Connect you can specify max distance for each piece of gear you assign to your rides. I don't think it alerts you, but you can see when you've exceeded the max in the app and on the website. I use it to gauge when I should clean and relube my chains, then once I'm done, I update the max distance.

Strava also can track this info in settings for each bike and the components. Obviously requires uploading rides to Strava.

Sensor 2 keeps 300 hours of activity in memory.

Clever. Thanks. Will add a couple of "personas" to tracks periodic mileage such as (1) rotate chains (500 kms) ; (2) repack hubs (5000 kms); (3) total

This is the best way to do it.

When you pull up a (any) ride in the mobile app, you get a bar chart for each piece of gear used on that ride, and how close it is to its end of life.

You can get creative. Some of my friends are gear in Connect, I know how many miles I've hiked or ridden with different people, and more importantly I can get a list of everything I've done with that person, which helps in planning new adventures.

Or the same thing with a Cannondale label.

Requires a cannondale sensor (or so it looks)

WRT DCRainmaker -- I've read his review (even commented on it, asking about sensor's memory). IIRC he doesn't describe the "gear trick" but rather says that he has custom soft.

I would suppose that cumulative distances by activity will be (if not already) a feature of GC. Useful to keep track of wear and tear. Hadn't realized that the "gear" feature was a good way to get the data. I didn't see any interest in associating a run with a pair of shoes, or a ride with a specific bike. Makes sense to me now.

The Cannondale sensor appears to be the same thing as the Garmin Sensor 2.

BTW, I found that there is a Garmin Connect setting that will email you when you go over the max distance set for a piece of gear. On the website, it's under Account Settings->Messages->Receive Connect Emails (toggle)->Gear->Max Distance Alerts.
