Growing up my mother bought us kids bikes one year. She got me a pink (sigh) Schwinn road bike. My sisters both got Huffy hard tail mountain bikes in purple and green.
I rode my sister's Huffy off a bridge accidentally one day onto those big stones they use to rebuild washed out banks. My shirt was ripped cleanly off, jeans torn and I lost a shoe. I was banged all up, a walking bruise for weeks. That Huffy? Slightly torn seat and a small scratch on the fork. Gave it away years later when we moved, thousands of miles on it. Went back up to visit a few years ago and I swear I saw one of the neighbor kids on it.

Today's Huffy's have nothing at all to do with the Huffy's we had as kids. Its just a name now, slapped onto cheap bikes by the Chinese company that owns the name.

I was a kid in the 90s. This would have been 93-94? And, she wasn't able to spend too much money for four kids bikes. I think she bought them at either Ames or Kmart.

I would suggest looking at & perhaps riding one of today's Huffys before passing judgment on them. Many of the 'expensive' brands are made in China these days too. I have seen some very nice bikes made in China. Some of the brands I've seen that are made in China - Raleigh, Specialist, & Huffy just to name a few.

I got a lot of good bikes and this includes my "Beater bike" which is my 90's Huffy Mountain Bike. I went on a major, muddy trail ride on this bike today and beat the crap out of it. Hit several jumps, went through lots of mud, couple of hill climbs, etc................
I have never serviced this bike besides airing the tires and cleaning/lubing the chain. I bent both rims slightly on some hardcore jumps, but straightened them out with my knees and keep going! I plan on upgrading the rims soon. I might get some cool rims for my good mountain bike and swap the Mavic rims to the Huffy.
It's heavy, old, and cheap, but I still love it! Ashtabula Crank for the win!

I trash picked a Huffy Superia mountain bike last weekend and have been using it to speed my travels across campus (parking garage to my building).
Needed the front brake bolt tightened and the rear brake cable needed lube to to get it freed up. Front shift lever was partially broken off.
Spent an hour or so today at the bike coop swapping the flat handle bar for a riser bar and installing a fairly nice left friction thumb shifter. Got all 15 gears working and it is now a pretty nice little cruiser.

I have the "Edsel" of all Huffy's, a 1980 Aerowind. Even had a featured ad on tv. Fully intact right down to the reflectors, white bar tape and plastic aero shrouds on the brake calipers. I cut the tires off it and stuck it on the wall of my shop. Quite a novelty. Weird looking bike shaped object that it is.

The first bike I bought for myself was a Huffy Wind. I rode it for years until I bought my friend's Dad's Raleigh Grand Prix. It is still hanging in my shed no worse for wear. I am thinking of getting it rideable next summer.
I have a near mint Aerowind also in the shed. I picked it up for practically nothing because someone backed over the front wheel.
and my Huffy Crown Jewel is the Concours Professional I have that needs a front fork. Long story how I got that but it has never been ridden! I worked at a Toy Store and it was scratched, so deemed unsaleable. I convinced the Manager to let me have it instead of throwing it in the trash compactor!
and recently I almost bought a Ultima for 35.00 off CL but missed out. I merely wanted it for laughs as it was black with red stripes and mirrored the look of the Concours and the Schwinn Voyaguer 11.8 and Sport Tourer I own

Circa 1985 Huffy Windsprint - $20 thrift store find when I was cruising through looking for Garcia ties that I collect - bought it to restore as a learning project - this was the night I bought it:

I have a Huffy Windsprint. Bought it probably in 1984 from Target. I rode it while in college for about 3 months and then it has been in storage ever since. Now its missing the rear brake cable, the rear derailleur spring is shot. A bit of corrosion on the handlebars. I wonder if its worth it to mod and make it going again.

My Huffy Concours, is under going a complete restoration, at the moment. Bought it in 80-81 and converted it to a touring bike. Added a Suntour Mountech RD and 14-34 cassette, SR crank with 46/32T.
Road it many years and centuries. It's been stored away and after joining this forum, I got inspired to restore it, during the winter.

Not my style of bike at all but I could see why you guys like them. I would feel totally confidant riding a solid cycle like these.

Its all about the cruise
I grew up with Huffy's in the family. Back then early 70's they were pretty much considered a heavier bike than most. Their designs were unique. In the late 90's I was a buyer and purchased Rayovac" batteries for the HVAC industry. Rayovac always had promotions and there was a time they offered a Huffy mountain bike for every 12 cases mixed. Lol I did a lot of business with Rayovac, they shipped me a pallet of these bikes. Maroon Huffy 18 speed mountain bikes..I kept two for my boys and they used them for years. I rode them frequently, they got beat up for sure by the boys lol, left outside in the rain/snow, but used them for years. I would tune them up when they really became inoperable lol, but hey you do what you gotta do lol.
Lets fast forward to today. 3 years ago I got a job six doors up from my house working at a restaurant/bar. I figure I would go get a cheap bike to ride to and from rather than turn a car key lol. Plus I figure it would be good exercise for me. So I went to Walmart and was shocked to see all the Huffys they had in stock(not to mention all the other bikes they had).
So I picked this bad boy out, Single speed Cranbrook 2014 $90 bucks. I brought it home, tightened it up and off I went. Since then shes run great and I have been frequently riding it (I would say over 800 miles so far) with no problems. I do take care of it maintenance wise....
Basically my story line is really no different from anyone else's. Now that I have more time to ride, I can clearly say this bike did get me back into bike riding (I refuse to use the word cycling lol). And I now am in search of another new bike to add to it. Ive been researching cruisers for the past year or so. But I gotta tell ya. Huffy has still a great offering and I really am considering sticking with this line and getting the "panama jack" for camp...
I do plan on getting the firmstrong bike I want but I just cant rule out the huffys...there not bad at all and have remained imo consistent over the years and really have nice color and layout schemes. Some names they have had for decades...
Here's there current website and offering

Here's my restored Huffy Concours (renamed Strayvaigin) in final stages of assembly.I had to repaint the down tube, seat stays and chain stays. Added brake QR levers, down tube shifters, cable guides , new red cabling, decals and mountain SPD pedals. Lots of scrubbing and polishing to all the aged components. Also, new set of tires.
Can't wait for the weather to warm up and salt washed of the roads, for a shake down ride.

I used to build bikes in department stores. Working for a co. Called ylce. Huffy and Murray were the big brands circa1980s. Huffy's were much lighter than Murrays. I always took the huffy's first when I could. They weren't great bikes but they were better than some and with a little care they last a long time. My favorites were the lug frame ones made by Raleigh corp.

I think it was in 2005. I was going thru a I want a recumbent phase. I bought one of these thinking that was as close as I would get to a recumbent. I could drop the seat down and my kids could ride it. It became lovingly known as the nerd mobile. I've thought about selling it next season to put towards my next bike.
