Yes, the Wife's Cilo. I don't have a problem holding onto it but, it's way to small for me. SLX Tubing, full 7400 dura ace. Maybe it needs to sit a few more years.

Ouch--I spent more than that on parts, not to mention the too-much I spent buying the bike in the first place. I'm the anti-flipper, evidently.

This year is a buyers market regarding bikes in my very seasonal market. Prices were decent in spring, flat in summer, now with selling season waning inventory has built. Even with students back (15k+- in my area) lots of 100+- riders sitting. I sold two this week for 80 a piece including this decent bianchi nyala. Anything over 175 is sparking little interest, (like this totally overhauled univega).

+10. Sloar has enough inventory for his own Schwinnfest. Bloomington's further, but the prospectings better.

If Sloar did Bloomington, he might be able to work in Terre Haute as well (get both UI and ISU)...yes, even southern boys know a bit about Indiana! And then...a trip up to Purdue as well...take several bikes and have a selling weekend!

I've had a lot over the years. Every so often I'll give a bike a 'blow out' price just to get rid of it. At the moment I'm having trouble selling a 70 series Paramount mtb.

Trust me, this works.

Don't forget to advertise free delivery.

Flyer the universities ahead of time.

Kiosks.

Like right now while the incoming still have a couple of $$$.

Time's a wastin'.

It's funny, I had a Super Sport, same color as yours, for sale at the beginning of summer. Nice single speed conversion. Origin 8 crank, nice wheels, Avocet saddle, Woodchipper bars, lights front and rear. Listed it over and over for weeks on Chicago CL. Not one response. So just decided to keep it. Parts were worth more than what I was asking for the bike.

A few months ago I had a Cannondale R300 listed here and CL for what I thought was a fair price ($300 I think) but no bites. I loaned it to a friend after a couple of months and of course shortly afterward got a small nibble from CL. Might try it again soon.

That's a sharp looking bike. I'm surprised it hasn't sold.

Sloar,

Got any leftover parts?
I was just given an 81 SS but the front Suntour Cyclone (mk1) derailleur is broken.

I am looking for a Suntour Cyclone Front Derailleur (mk1).

I don't mind driving "ALL THE WAY TO MUNCIE"

Price it at twice what it's worth and put 'firm price' in your ad. That's what one of the BF members does on my local CL

The Super Sports that Sloar has is a totally different bike. They are made in Chicago, with Huret or similar derailleurs. Your 1981 SS is a made in Japan model by Panasonic. It does not share a single part in common with the Chicago built Super Sports. The good news is your 1981 is a much better bike IMHO.

But the 1970s Super Sports enjoy a nostalgia premium. And Chicago Schwinns did have a unique look and style. Only reason I am holding on to my 1970s Sports Tourer.

When area LBS shop rates for a full overhaul is about $175-$200, not including the purchase of the bike and the consumable parts, they're a bargain for the astute buyer. I understand they eventually do sell, usually within 95% of asking price.

I've have an early LOOK carbon fiber and restored 76 Viscount on CL and in the classifieds here. I got a couple
of messages warning me of my likely demise if I used the Viscount "death fork" , nothing else for 2 months.

I sell to a lot of college kids. They like road bars. Anytime I have had other than road bars on a vintage road bike like this, I have struggled to sell it.

My experience as well. Meanwhile, older adults all seem to want north road bars. So its a matter of what market you are selling into.

College student market = need to be willing to deliver, or live really close to the school. I live in the boonies, so I tend to add a line to all my ads: "will meet in Asheville at a mutually convenient location and time".

wow, what a bargain. a full tune in seattle costs $150. an overhaul costs $300 for the labor alone, but they're not going to tape your bars, shop for period correct replacement parts, or throw in free cables or anything. it's the reason a fully overhauled bike on craigs (with pics of the bare frame) is worth $400.

Thanks, if the 30 days on CL runs out with no nibbles I've decided to wrap it up for the Winter and roll it out again next Spring. It really is a nice old bike, not cosmetically perfect, it has some light surface rust in the nooks and crannies on some of the chrome and a few minor scuffs and scratches but it really shines up well and it rides really nice. The original tires still had the nubs and the brake pads had zero wear but had literally turned to stone. It now has new tires, brake pads and saddle and needs nothing. That's the original bar tape and except for where a mirror was clamped on one bar end there's not a mark in it. Not selling is one thing but I've received ZERO interest in it, not even an insultingly low offer.

Lose the weird shorty fenders, put upright bars and a comfortable seat on it and it will sell. A campus bike needs a rack, too. You want to appeal to young girls who want to look cute while cruising around campus. No young girl is going to think she will look cute hunched over on the drops while sitting on an ass hatchet on a bike with weird ass fenders.

Just my opinion, of course.

It really is true how cyclical interest in bikes is (well, for people who aren't year-round nuts like us). Check out this "Google trends" chart on the term "vintage bike" and you will see a dramatic spike at the end of each summer. Also shows, interestingly, that "vintage bike" reached it peak interest in the summer of 2013.
https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=vintage%20bike

P.s. I am having a hard time selling a used couch on CL. Anyone in the bay area looking for a red velvet couch from Pottery Barn?

I considered all those points, if I can scrounge up the right vintage rack I'd gladly put it on but there are already several "converted" road bikes with upright bars and big fat "comfy" seats on there now and they aren't selling either. Believe it or not that saddle is quite comfortable, it just doesn't look like it and unfortunately perception is everything. I sold a World Sport this Spring with the same fenders on it and I got a lot of compliments on the fenders.
