niland ca to past bombay beach and back. the road on the east side of the salton sea is much better than the west side for both traffic and surface.

^looks recently repaved. west side pavé was good a year ago and shoulder is wide but yah, the traffic is fairly big (trucks and more trucks) and steady.
nice pictures capturing the desolation and desert expanses. great views of toro peak, rabbit peak, san jacinto and san gorgonio. biggest challenge(s) on the
eastern shore still the (wind and) support? don't remember much support on the eastern shore but it's easily been 2 decades since i was last there.
i can't imagine there's been a significant increase in population and/or non-farming business activity. every winter/spring i say i'm gonna do the approx 106 mile
circumnavigation of the salton sea and never do. maybe this year?

ooga-booga it’s usually a nw wind. i start just outside niland so that gives a tailwind coming back, the other days wind wasn’t too bad a headwind. there's water at a small state park and also at a state recreation area and a store in bombay beach on the east side...also the east side has some nice sections of rollers that the west side doesn’t.
from borrego springs
to ranchita
montezuma valley rd.

rode off the approx 8 foot wide path three times or so while looking at the scenery but didn't crash. if there were big dropoffs, i'd be long dead.

nice pics. last time i rolled through there, the little general store in ranchita (next to ranchita man) just before/after the descent/climb summit was closed for good.
a shame since there isn't anything else around for miles (santa ysabel or lake henshaw or warner springs) w/o descending to borrego springs.
always try to descend montezuma grade w/o using the brakes. only successful one out of 6-7 times.

it was open on my ride.....Borrego Springs is a good starting point for both Montezuma, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and of course seeing the Ricardo Breceda desert sculptures.

I love that tree. It is located at a point after a short, but sometimes steep climb. Many hot summer days I have briefly stopped under its shade, to cool off before heading out to the Gibraltar climb. The tree is a good friend; when the Thomas fire swept through the area I was afraid that it would be torched. Thankfully the fire skipped the area.
The picture below is from the same area, but looking out towards the Santa Barbara Channel. Very pretty area.
