Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How did you manage to get a shot of Hwy 1 without any traffic? Pretty unusual in my experience. Great shot!

Thanks. My team of domestiques laid across the road, creating a human barrier to allow me to take the shot.

Seriously, there are times when traffic when, for whatever reason, in both directions stops. That’s the time to take the sot.

Wow, I would have never guessed there were roads that deserted in the LA area. I hope you enjoy your two weeks of spring, that green grass will probably be brown by the end of March. I bet those 3 cars you saw probably all passed you at or near the same time. Murphy's Law.

Is that fire damage on those hillsides? Hopefully some wildflowers will appear at some point,

That climb looks wicked. Photo really captures the apparent steepness, which is difficult takes some skill to do. Any idea of the gradient?

I've discovered that the toughest climbs in California, are commonly at the lower elevations that never (or rarely) get any snow. Road builders take advantage of that fact to include some really punishing 15-20% grades on hills, often foregoing switchbacks and going straight up steep hillsides. It's the reason why the Eroica rides have such steep climbs, as the Central Coast has an unbelievably mild climate and gets a tiny trace of snow maybe once every 50 years.

this little 50 yard (or so) stretch felt like 16% or so. there were some other ramps later on the climb but i remember this one as being the hardest. heading farther uphill, it vacillates between 6-11% for another 3 miles or so.
horrible pavement but it's not an issue until you descend it. the western (dirt) side doesn't have anything this steep.

Most of my rides take me through my beloved Ventura County. I love riding here.

Over the past 30 years I have been up and down these roads; I know every rise and every drop, I know every hill and every descent, I know where and when the prevailing winds will pick up and I can plan accordingly.

When diabetes finally robs me of my eyesight and renders me blind, I will still be able to mount my trusted Bottecchia and tell her, “come on my dearest bici, take me for a ride.” The Bottecchia and I have traversed these roads often enough that she will know exactly where to take me.

Seeing some of these open road photos makes me long for living in a much less populous place. I envy some of you folks and your routes.

Yeah, but the downside of no other people around is ... no jobs. So unless you are retired, independently wealthy, or have succeeded in gaming the whole "working for a living" system, it's tough to keep a roof over your head and food on the table. There are lots of deserted places where I would like to live too, but the economics just don't work.

But the next best thing is, go for a ride someplace that's nearly deserted, and patiently wait until there's no traffic, and quickly snap a picture, so that the place appears to be totally deserted.

or you can live in a large urban area that's close to some area rides with little traffic and great views.....living in west los angeles i can ride into the santa monica mountains from where i live..a hour/+ highway drive east or north can put me into some wonderfully quiet valley/mountain areas and since i do some renewable energy research work in the mojave desert i can get a ride in there occasionally on routes i know are much less traveled by cars. for me getting centered with the solitude and views on some of my rides is a great balance to my urban riding/commuting which i really enjoy too since we have a reasonable infrastructure for it especially bike paths.

Yeah, I guess if a road doesn't go anywhere, it can be fairly deserted even in an urban area, you mainly just have to avoid roads that people commute to work on. When I lived in the Bay Area, I used to love going up to Mt. Diablo in the afternoons, and once you gain some altitude, be able to look down on hundreds of thousands of people trapped in traffic below, but only have to deal with a few cars yourself, because the road only went to the top of the mountain and then back down, so no commuter traffic. That was pretty awesome.
