Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cost Of Components After I Buy My Frame?

Hi I was considering purchasing a CAAD9 frame from Cannondale and building up my first bike from there.

My main question is, how much will it cost to buy+install components (Either 105/tiagra or Tiagra primarily) and rims + seat

The frame comes with a fork, seat post, and a stem.

From here, what should i be looking to spend. My LBS told me that the CAAD9 frame is one of the best in the biz. What should I be looking to spend on a fairly good one used?

thanks everyone!

It'll be cheaper to buy the complete CAAD9 5.

Somewhere between $500 and $1500 depending on what you buy. Perhaps you should go to a website that sells bike parts, put them in your cart, and see what the total cost of all the parts you want is?

Skip the Tiagra and go 105 at least, or better with Ultegra SL from www.probikekit.com
Good luck.

For lower cost bikes, it is almost always going to be cheaper to buy a complete bike than to build it up from components. For higher cost bikes it may turn out to be a wash, especially as it will be unlikely that you will find a pre-assembled bike with exactly the components you want (and if you are paying $5K-$10K you are going to expect exactly the components you want. As for the cost of assembly, learn to do your own work and then it won't matter.

You could probably get the 2009 CAAD9 with Tiagra for ~$1000. Just go with that.

agreed, buy the whole bike, save some money, make your next upgrade a build project over time so you can afford the more expensive parts.

Building your own bike is fun, but not really economical, especially at the Tiagra/105 level. As everyone has already said, you're probably better off getting the complete bike.

Buy a BMC SLC-01 frame, and then put Red/DuraAce/Record parts on that.

I did the same thing with a caad5 frame and kept everyting under 1000. It was a mix of new and used parts ...mainly ultegra/105 parts. A lot of it was craigslist buys...

What does a BMC SLC have to do with the low budget build the original poster has planned? =/

It doesn't, but at least it makes more sense.

You can get a full SRAM Rival groupset from gvhbikes.com for $660. Add on $200 for good wheels, and then factor in headset ($20 at the cheapest), seatpost ($20 at the cheapest), stem ($20 cheapest), bars ($45), tape ($10), tires ($40 total cheapest), pedals ($45) and you're there.

Not too bad, really. Of course, you now need a headset press (homemade easily), BB tool, a set of allen wrenches and an open day!

Oh crap, I forgot the seat. That ones up to you, but anywhere from $30 (E3 Form) to $200.
