Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pray this rider is okay

This just happened in my town......

Four injured in crash on I-175 exit ramp in St. Pete
Friday, July 18, 2008

ST. PETERSBURG - Four people were injured following a serious accident in downtown St. Petersburg Friday afternoon.

According to reports, a truck exiting I-175 at MLK Jr. Street S. broadsided a SUV, causing it to flip over. The SUV became airborne and landed on a bicycle rider.

The bicycle rider was extracted from the wreckage and taken to Bayfront Medical Center as a trauma alert.
Two other victims were also taken there as well.

The crash initially caused traffic to back up on I-175 all the way to the I-275 split. However, police now report that I-175 is clear, and that as of 12:20 p.m., the only parts of downtown that are blocked are the eastbound lanes of Fifth Avenue S. from 16th Street, and MLK Street S. near the site of the crash.

The fire department is also on the scene to clean up the streets. The truck involved in the accident was carrying grease collected from restaurants, which spilled all over the road.

A bicycle tire was visible from underneath of the SUV. A straw hat was nearby.

He and another man tried to aid the bicyclist, who was lying on his back, until paramedics arrived. Walker said his eyes were glazed over.
“He wasn’t conscious, he wasn’t breathing, responding, nothing,” Walker said. “I started praying.”

What a terrible accident. Unfortunately, prayer will not help.

Spiritual interventions do not help recovery, but may relax heart patients, reports the Harvard Men’s Health Watch

BOSTON, MA —
In the first study, researchers looked at whether prayer on behalf of a patient could assist recovery from bypass surgery. A third of the patients were prayed for after being told that this might or might not be done; a third did not receive prayer; and a third received prayer after being told this would occur. The researchers concluded that prayer had no effect on complication-free recovery from bypass.

In the second study, researchers randomly assigned patients to one of four groups before elective cardiac catheterization and angiography. One group received standard care. The others, in addition to standard care, received either prayer; music, imagery, and touch (MIT) therapy; or both prayer and MIT therapy. MIT therapy included instruction in meditation and deep breathing, and the application of "healing touch" hand positions by trained practitioners. The investigators found that neither prayer nor MIT therapy was beneficial in preventing subsequent heart problems.

If he was really pronounced dead twice, we should really be praying that he be transferred to a more competent trauma center for the rest of his care.

Actually he was deemed dead by the Paramedics then declared dead by the medical center. Maybe the wording matters in this case. Is there a difference between declared and pronounced?

Yeah, there is. Only a licensed physician can pronouce someone dead, and there are several criteria you have to use. And if someone was pronounced and revived, that's actually a pretty major screw-up.

Now, granted, most of my trauma experience has been with the Maryland State Police medevac crews, who are arguably some of the very best medics in the country when it comes to trauma, but it's pretty rare for a medic to deem/declare someone dead. Generally that means something that anyone would consider non-survivable--decapitation, rigor mortis at the scene, etc. etc. Most crews will give anyone else a fair shot.

Sounds like the guy was pretty badly messed up, and the medics and trauma team were a little overwhelmed. I just hope that there wasn't any significant inaction/non-action that will lead to a worse outcome for this guy.

Living the first 28 years of my life in Baltimore County I got to see the medevac crews in action more times than I care to think about. They have helped a few friends of mine and I am sure that them being there fast made quite a difference in there positive outcome.

Yeah, they're amazing. Granted I just got to be on the receiving end (at U of MD Shock Trauma, another amazing place) but those guys are GOOD.

That's horrible. I was actually thinking about this the other day while i was at a big intersection waiting for the light... "What if someone gets T-Boned and a car comes flying at me" that thought freaked me out for a moment, but i rode on

My brother, a paramedic, says they'll keep working on someone until they get to the hospital even when they know it's completely hopeless, because pronouncing someone as dead requires a whole heck of extra paperwork to fill out.

I don't know how good or not the MD medevac crews are, but they do have the best safety record in the nation and some of the most intensive training.

Regarding the article, I bet it was the reporter who messed up the terms. Deemed dead at the scene makes sense, it just means he wasn't breathing and his heart was not pumping. Declared dead in the ER is a whole other story.

Either way, good luck to the rider.

I could not find any additional info besides a new picture and the riders name, Kenneth Riggins.

Most likely, the patient was a trauma red, meaning he went into cardiac arrest due to a traumatic injury. Technically, he was dead because there was no cardiac activity, but he was worked. It's common for people to re-arrest in the ER/Trauma Center; the amount of injury to send someone into cardiac arrest is significant, you can bet he was busted up pretty bad. When someone is a trauma red, they don't usually come back due to the damage of whatever organ system that caused the arrest.
