Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coffee = precious precious juice.

Where's a link to that recent study that showed endurance athletes recovering 60% faster by drinking coffee?

I'm a big fan of coffee myself. I roast my own and use the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine (w/ PID for those here that know what I'm talking about) and it pulls the best shots ever. 1,000x better than any Starbucks crap.

"Boy, I love coffee. I had a cup mid-ride today in 90+F weather. The Starbucks cans of double shot espresso, light, is the best mid-ride. "

+1

They can now make that fresh for you in any size, 2 shots of espresso on ice + milk. A small size kept me going through the other night on my night shift (9 hours worth). I'll take that over red bull any day of the week, plus it tastes great (i added a little sugar though)

I love coffee too but fortunately I haven't let myself get pulled into the world of premium blends and specialty machines that cost hundreds of dollars. No sir, just give me some Community dark roast and any drip maker and I am good to go.

It was really hard for me to leave espresso when I moved out into my apartment and relied only on press. Once I realized how much goes into making a perfect pot of press I rarely drink espresso anymore, press is definitely a art in itself. I don't know if I'd say it's the best method, but that could definitely be argued.

No offense man, but those machines at Starbucks...those are robots, I can't really consider people who work at Starbuck's these days real barristas. All you have to do is steam the milk and push a button, it grinds, fills, tamps, and pulls the shot for you.

I love coffee but I can't have it within 2 hours of riding or I'll have crazy heart burn. I stick to morning and post ride coffee.

Agreed on the grinder (must be burr!), but disagree on the stovetop. The secret to smooth consistent pulls with caramelly crema is consistency of pressure. A cheap machine with a tiny boiler cannot make a good espresso pull, neither can a stovetop. They aren't physically capable of it. Go to Italy, pull into an Autogrill (truck stop on the Autostrada) and order a ristretto. If that isn't the best caffe' you've ever had, you misunderstand what good is.

I personally prefer LavAzza pienoroma for my beans. I've got a La Cimbali M50 Dolcevita superauto currently, but am planning on trading that down to something like a La Cimbali Bistro M21 semiauto shortly. (The M50 is just too damn much machine, but I got a screaming deal on it.)
