My wife used to have a student who skate boarded to school. She let him park his board in her closet (she's an art teacher) so the school Nazi's wouldn't confiscate it. His commute distance was 2 miles one way.

I used to ride a longboard all over the place last year in college - it was good times. Over the summer I discovered an awesome new thing called a "Bicycle" - truly a remarkable invention. If I may say, they must be the most perfect machines ever invented.

Eventually I got a "fixed gear bicycle", and now all the beautiful mormon girls here in Utah are lining up to go out with me.

No, but really - the ladies dig bikes. LBs are fun, and cruising around campus is fun - but commuting would be just plain dangerous.

I used a Xootr kickboard to get to my train station 1.5km away (about a mile). It is easier to carry than even my folding bike.

Yes, I did that for years when I lived on Miami Beach. I used a longboard to commute everywhere. A car there is ridiculous, and I got tired of my bicycles getting stolen no matter how well I locked them!!! I found an abandoned skateboard and got hooked right away. The following week I went a bought a longboard.

I don't have one, but I'm planning to get one for school next year just in case I have a bike problem that can't be fixed right away or if my building is far away from the dining commons.

I skateboard/bus commuted for 15+ years. I worked nights for a while there, and I would skip the last four miles of the bus ride so I could bomb a hill before work. Good times.

I rode a 38-inch Powell with 90mm cruiser wheels on it. I've ridden it once since I started bicycle commuting. The whole way home, all I could think was "This is so inefficient compared to cycling. How did I do it for all those years?"

I still like taking my old SALBA out to a few of the old skate spots, but I don't commute on four wheels anymore.

longboarding is great, obviously biking is more efficient, but there is no feeling like cruising a smooth skateboard. Anytime that the weather is nice and time is not a factor, I'll cruise my longboard or my mini, but that might just be the surfer in me. Check out silverfishlongboarding.com for great skating forums. Also I think the person who posted above me is also on the site, I've seen the pink and the green bike on there a couple times.

Here's my son with his longboard. I don't know of anyone who commutes on their 9 to 12 foot surfboard where I live.

neversummer pin - these boards are sweet, you might recognize the name from the top notch snowboard company, same guys. Great construction, awesome warranty, great components.

As for ranking those board companies, obviously some are better then others, but it all depends on what you are doing. Gravity will be close with sector 9 in products that they offer, cruising, but have more sliders. Loaded is flexy indestructable cruisers that can pretty much do anything that adam colton wants to do on a board, but they have a dancer and speed board coming out. Landys have a lot more downhill boards, ***** is an awesome maker, but recently there has been a little quality control problems, its all taken care of by now though. ***** makes a good variety of boards, all that are top notch in their own nitch. I haven't heard much about dewey weber, but they look like quality built boards with a surf style in mind.

Exactly what he said. I have a ***** that started splitting after a couple weeks riding. Sounds like they might have it under control now, but I won't be buying another.

Longboarding and slalom is my other passion. G&S is a good, middle of the road company. Depending on how much you'd like to spend there are a lot of great longboard companies out there including several custom makers (Insect, Subsonic, and Feral Arts are three of my favorites in my quiver).

If I had as many bicycles as I have skateboards my wife would leave me...

My bikes that were stolen were double and triple locked! The skateboard was in the garbage.
