Wheel sets under $300. Opinions please
My rear wheel on my bike needs to be replaced. My lbs shop suggested I go with Mavic open pro with ultegra hubs. I did some research on BF on Mavic OP and it seems pretty balanced. Even though I really need a new rear wheel Might as well get the front replaced also because it keeps on untruing.
The stock wheels that came with my bike are Alex 200s I believe.
So I was wondering if there were any wheels sets that cost under $300. I ride roughly hard since I live in the mountains. I am not worried about weight because I just want wheels that will last me awhile. Ive put about 2000miles on my wheels and my rear wheel makes these clicking noises. I had my rear wheel overhauled and it still clicks and I want/need to replace it because it gets very annoying on rides longer than 2hours.
Opinions please.

Well, the Ultegra/Open Pro wheels cost $250/pair at Performance. Add another $20-30 to have a competent wheelsmith check and adjust the tension and they should be a reliable set.

Souls huh? I have heard of them but didnt really know they were in my price range. I have been riding for about five months now and am still new to the different bicycle companies and price range

I was looking at Souls website and spotted the Souls s4.0. It is more than what I wanted to pay for but would it be worth it or should i spend that type of money else where.
Creatre says Psimet. Is there a model that you are refferring to or are you just pulling my chain because they are expensive wheels. Again I dont really know bicycle companies and their prices

Don't put much faith on the wheelbuilders at Performance. By all means, buy wheels there for the prices, but have those wheels checked out before you put them on the road.

The wheels he built for me are about 18 months old, and are about as bulletproof a set of wheels as you can get. I got them, put them on the bike, and haven't touched them in thousands of miles on some of the nastiest roads in the country, and I weigh over 230.
They were around $340 delivered.

I had a set of the ALX 270's on my bike before the rear hub went bad. I replaced them with the Mavic Aksium Race wheelset. They made a world of difference. I ride some rough road and they have stayed true (I'm 180lbs). I would highly recommend the Mavic Aksium Race ($269 at Performance).

If you don't mind silver you can get the Mavic Equipe set for Shimano from Nashbar for $249.99. Or you can do what I did, get JensonUSA to price match and pay another $30 for the MP3 warranty which will cover them from any damage for two years. Tonight will be my first ride on this set. With shipping my total came to just under $300.

Why not figure out what is causing the wheel to click and fix it? Most of the causes can be fixed. One that can't is when there is a small shard of rim trapped on the inside of the rim. That often happens with Open Pros. It's not very loud but it is noticeable.
Besides the click, open pros also tend to crack at the spoke holes, even though they have eyelets. They also make weaker wheels than a deeper "aero" rim does. I'm not a fan and after going through four of them won't be buying another.
Performance ultegra + open pros are still a reasonable deal as long as you understand that the hubs will last far longer than the rims. And that Performance sells an assembled wheel kit, not a fully tensioned and stress-releived wheel. You have to do those things yourself. And also Performance will gouge you on the shipping. You may be able to escape that by having them shipped to a nearby Performace store.
