Steel plate need to be Blanchard ground?
If I were to get a 3/4" steel plate in either 24"x36" or 36"x48", does it need to be Blanchard ground to be used as a surface plate?
The yard rep had mentioned that their plates are .030 across that span. Since I know nothing about this, I'm looking for the experts advice.
Thanks a lot.

That's not going to do it for a surface plate.
You need something like this. Not that expensive, but the shipping is steep.

Rotary (Blanchard) grinding will not produce a flat surface. There is always a dip at the center of the rotary marks. The surface finish left by rotary grinding isn't great either. I guess if you aren't if you are looking at holding very tight tolerances you could make it work. Also, steel will wear quickly if you use it a lot.
Like woodcraft said, you want a granite surface plate. Pink is generally better and more wear resistant than black but either is fine. You might be able to find a used one locally but be aware if has been used extensively it probably won't be very flat either and will need to be lapped in.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I had put this in the Framebuilders forum.
I looked at granite, but I want to be able to put holes in it so I can mount my BB post and my head tube centers. Not nearly as easy with a 4 or 6" thick piece of granite.
Admin: I posted in Road Cycling by accident. Feel free to delete if needed as I put in Framebuilder's as well.
