My daughter joined the softball team in junior high. To help her be a better hitter, I made a "softball cannon" out of giant pvc pipe, air tank, and a quick release valve. Set it up in the driveway, pointed at a batter's box chalked on the garage door. Opened the valve, and BAM. The ball smashed into the door, and she decided that softball wasn't for her.

In the beginning, I broke spokes on a regular basis and I used to carry spokes taped to the nds chainstay. I had different people build wheels for me and just assumed that was how it was going to be.
Somehow I stumbled across the local wheelbuilder legend and his wheels never broke spokes and the rear wheel would last 10k miles before it cracked. I stopped carrying spokes. I've since found other guys who do pretty well.
I had a set of wheels I built on my touring bike when my ex and I were touring around Oregon and I broke a spoke. She was quite annoyed. "How long is this going to take?" I had a cassette cracker (it was a drive side spoke, of course) and both lengths of spoke with me so I fixed it roadside pretty quick. She was not impressed, as if anyone should be able to do it right away.

Ever see those flexible spokes they sold? I think they were carbon fiber or steel cable and you could roll them up and put them in your pocket. They didn't tell you if it was a drive side spoke you probably couldn't get the broken one out on the side of the road.

I did save the 'cannon". It works as a great drain cleaner for the shower! She was always athletic. Went on to get lots of awards in high school for the water polo's team goalie. Then was recruited to Cal Berkeley to be on the crew team where they won the PAC 10 freshman championship. But like was said earlier, the team demanded SO much time for training that she couldn't do the classes she needed, and didn't play after the freshman year.

Random thought - Why do so many folks trying to sell bikes on FB Marketplace and Craigs List only post NDS pictures? Do they think there's something shameful about the drivetrain?

I've missed my while-I'm-cooking tipple since the Redbreast 12 ran out, so I decided to pick something up and stick with the theme of single pot still Irish whisky -
I'm already working on dinner (carnitas tacos ), but I've resisted since, well, it's only 3pm and I'm in a pretty hands-off phase for the next hour or so.

Kidding, of course. Now that Vol is gone I try to pick up the comedy slack.
