hello all, i dont ride a bmx but maybe you can still help me out, im riding a mountain/street marin and i've been practicing my wheelie for a good two years and i perfected most of my style but i still have one little problem.... i can't maintain a fixed speed with one wheel in the air, i gradually build up speed until i dont have any resistance from my pedals and then i have no choice but to go back down. My bike isn't in great condition so i think changing gears during a wheelie is out of the question... I hold the handle bars a weird way with the front of my palms while in the air and reaching for that break leaver is quite a challenge but when im able to touch the lever the front end of my bike just slams down instead of the whole bike slowing down.


so what am i doing wrong and what can i do to improve?

You're using acceleration to maintain your wheelie. you gonna have to use balance and maintain a constant speed. Since you are using a fixed gear, you can't manual (balancing without pedaling) so this will be difficult with a FG.

Fortunately, nowhere did the OP say he was running a fixed gear.
Learn to coast in a wheelie.
It'll help your problem and Manuals are just plain cooler.

Learn to manual and feather the brake to control it.

You need to know where your balance point is. Best way to figure it out is to start really slow and loop out. Then, you need to be able to keep it steady. You need to keep a finger on your brake, but when you use it, just feather it so that it barely slows you down.

Sometimes I kind of half-crank I guess to keep the front end up.

ARGH!!!!! i tried pulling one without pedaling and its impossible!! i can hold it for about 1 second and thats about it hehehe...


should i lower my seat for this "manual"?

No, you don't need to sit in a manual. You just don't pedal.

all you gotta do is get used to it. it took me a while to get manuals good at all, and i actually ride bmx. practice makes perfect yo.
