Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes (for a few seasons), if it's a molded composite that comes off a giant computer-controlled machine somewhere in China and costs as much as a good car.
Got it.

I suppose that sailing (and flying) make cycling seem quite a bargain by comparison.

I don’t own an airplane yet, but for me to go rent one it’s about 165 dollars an hour where I’m at. For me to fly a cessna from newport news to knoxville would be about 3.5 hours depending on wind. So round trip 7 hours give or take. Fuel is typically included in the rental cost.

How is it billed if you fly somewhere for a couple days and then return? I assume that rate is just for flying time, right?

Yes. Cruising has been described as the art of fixing your boat in exotic locales and racing has been likened to tearing up 50 dollar bills under a cold shower. Re the "overhead" thread, no one who isn't a billionaire or a live-aboard bum with a wreck wants to think about the hours of use per dollar. It's just too crazy.

my flight school I learned to fly at, if you kept the plane over night I believe you had to fly a minimum of three hours a day.

Good news/bad news:

Good news is Heidi got a FREE RIDE 4 years FREE TUITION to Temple, and their Honors program.

Bad news is she says she really wants to go to NYU. Sad!

Yeah, we will have to sit tight for a few months and hope SHE comes to the conclusion that staying in-state makes the most sense. She can do Penn State, Temple, or University of Pittsburgh.

If it comes to a battle, it will be very unpleasant.

Temple's far enough from home.

Wow. Congratulations to all. That's great and, to my mind, an airtight reason for nixing NYU, unless she comes up with a comparable deal there.

When I was a young man and head over heals in love with fishing I used to dream of one day owning a boat. Oh what a grand time that would be! Then slowly along the way you you come to find out about the prohibitive costs involved, and eventually you come up with more realistic dreams. The transformation was helped tremendously by the fact I get seasick easily, so now there's no melancholy whatsoever.

I think so. I am hoping she will come to the correct decision without us forcing it on her.

The co-owner cuts the checks, holds my trembling hand, and tells me we can afford it. I get seasick, but only on the open ocean and I seem to keep going back for more.

Clearly she doesn't get it. You need to take a whole weekend, maybe longer, and thoroughly visit NY. Maybe consecutive weekends. Maybe it will get it out of her system.

. . . . . . . . OR it might make the craving worse. But that's a gamble worth taking, no.

No, don't bring your bike, you addict. Devote all the time to touring.

Also bring a fair amount of cash, it's New York after all..

My daughter inherited frugal genes on both sides and we made sure she was good and scared of debt before we launched her. Yours just might be similar.

If it were me I'd pick Penn State. My son chose Florida State over Penn State because the weather was better for track & field, but neither one was a free ride.

Tough love, yo.
