Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I keep finding numerous contradicting opinions on what to run at.

im 175 and was going to give 85F/95R a shot when I get it.
I'm 190 and run 90 front and 100 rear, so you're in the ballpark.

2012 Specialized Allez Evo. Upgraded groupset to SRAM Force 22. Upgraded the saddle to Romin Evo Pro and wheels to Reynolds mixed 58/46 aero set. Have new Ritchey Superlogic carbon seat-post, Ritchey Superlogic carbon stem on the way right now. Plan to upgrade to a Red22 cassette and S-Works crankset in the next two weeks. I have not weighed the bike. I will by the end of this month. Another Reynolds wheel-set on the way for training. Maybe planning to get new 2016 Allez smartweld frameset when released... **Got to get new pictures with the stem / handlebar slammed all the way down too.

The (Temporary) Gift of an Allez

A good friend gave me his bike while he's off to live in New York City for the next few or several years. I'm not sure of the year, although my friend thinks it's a 1985 model. He picked it up for a song and maybe he should have have waited for another tune, because it doesn't fit him. Apparently the bike was ridden only occasionally by the original owner and it sat inside his house when not on the road for the past three decades. My friend has put a few hundred miles on it over course of the last year.

While the bike could use some cleaning, everything seemed to work well when I put a half-dozen miles on it last night. Much of what's on the bike seems to be original, including the front tire (and tube) and Suntour components. The brake hoods are new. I've added the pedals and clips. The original bike came with some Look pedals. From an old catalog, I think the saddle and probably at least the rims were changed out at some point.

The bike looks like it could have been used in the American Flyers film. I may have to pick up a Hell of the West jersey.

I want to retire the 700c tires, and put one some similar, gumwall-like tires. The Specialized Turbo Cotton tires look good but are extremely pricey. Any suggestions?

I'm running Czar CST 23Cs on the Allez but they are the same poundage as the Specialized Roubaix 25C tires I have on the Roubaix and the Sirrus. 120 psi. I'm 5'9" and weigh 215-220 (it fluctuates). Low rolling resistance.

The shifting was getting sloppy on my Allez and the tires had a lot of cuts so it was time for new shoes and a new cassette and chain. There were about 2500 miles on the chain and over 5000 on the old cassette (shimano 9 speed). The jockey wheels on the rear derailleur had some sort of life form on them...

wow, when was the last time you cleaned your drivetrain before now? The build up is pretty thick. Very nice bike, take care of it.

i looked back at when I bought that chain. It actually has about 4500 miles on it. So last good cleaning was probably about 4500 miles ago.

Would anyone know where to locate a geometry chart for the 2005 Allez line of bikes? I've looked at the Specialized site and it doesn't give the geometry charts that far back.

Picked up a 2014 comp the other day. Hardly ridden as the previous owner upgraded to a tri-specific bike after a short training ride and one race. Completely stock but will look at upgrades as funds come in ... ie selling the scott ... and basement project is finished. Bike rack is rudimentary but it works!

Made a few changes since the last post and the bike ended up gaining weight, now at 6.7kg

Build specs and my resistance to drillium can be found on Pezcycling.

Can anyone tell me what year my Allez is? I'm pretty sure it's an 07 Allez Elite, but I've seen a couple pics where people said it was an 08. I can't find the 07 catalog.

Anyone know? TIA

2015 Allez, but is really a bit of an oddball. Originally setup has 2014 decals, 2014 manufacture date, but E5 frame with Claris groupset of 2015. Color was not available in 2014 or 2015 for the US. Supposed to have been a marketing color sample that was not brought to North America (though did find the color available in UK and Thailand for 2015 model year). The seat, frame, some cable routing, and end plugs for the handlebars are about all that is original. I've upgraded most everything else over the course of a year. New full 105 groupset, carbon fork, carbon seatpost, carbon handlebars and stem, new wheels and tires etc. Not trying for the lightest bike possible, but the most comfortable and fun to ride bike possible in a unique color. Man I love this bike, and I get lots of people drooling over it in person. Love the color. Loud and proud, and easier to see while riding on the road.

That's a nice color @quicktrigger. Wonder why the fork was left black instead of color matched. Is the headtube tapered?

Thanks nokia. I changed the fork from the original Al that was "tough" on chip seal roads, to a basic carbon fork. The carbon fork much improved the ride. The original Al fork (which I still have wrapped in a bag) is a matching Orange color scheme. I thought about having the carbon fork painted to match the original at an autobody shop, but in the end the black fork visually fit well wtih the other black components and I decided to keep it as is.

My pride and joy ...

I'm a true and devoted Specialized Tarmac aficionado, and after owning consecutively a Tarmac Pro SL,
an S-Works SL2, SL3, SL4 and an S-Works Venge, I treated myself to a 2016 S-Works Tarmac this spring.
But I always had a soft spot for its alloy sibling, the Allez, too. I just think Specialized produces the most sexy frames
on the market. So I couldn't resist ordering an Allez along with the Tarmac too, and this is how it turned out to be:
2016 Allez DSW SL 58 frameset
Mechanical Ultegra groupset / Dura Ace front derailleur
Ultegra pedals
Fulcrum Racing Zero whilst with Conti 4000S II 25 mm tires
S-Works stem
S-Works seatpost
Specialized alloy bars shallow drop with S-Wrap classic tape
Specialized Toupé Comp gel saddle
Specialized Rib Cages II
Cateye Strada wireless computer

It's incredible how well this bike rides and handles. Apart from being slightly heavier of course, I think it's as good as it's big brother, the Tarmac.

2016 Specialized Allez smartweld frameset. SRAM Red 22 crankset, SRAM 22 cassette. The rest of the groupset is Force 22, except the Rival 22 FD. Ritchey superlogic carbon seatpost (15 setback), Ritchey WCS 260 stem, and S-Works Tarmac shallow carbon handlebar. Reynolds 58/46 aero wheel set. Swapped over the stuff from my old Allez frameset you'll see on this page 22 up top. Lol... Then upgraded some more after...

There are so many different version of road bikes made by Specialized. What caught my attention is this Allez model have x1 front gear. Any other difference?

2002 Allez Sport. All components upgraded in 2010 to 10 spd Ultegra SL (a group that fell between Ultegra and Dura Ace but only lasted a couple of years).

Easton wheels, Thomson seat post, toupe saddle, ritchey bars, carbon SLK cranks. Still rides nice, but soon to be replaced with my recently acquired Allez Comp crmo build. (Pictures to come)
