I decided it was about time I made my daily fitness ride a little longer:
Twenty kilometers today.

Lots more walking this week, but I'll highlight Friday's ...
Friday I had to attend a work-related course, but had to make a dash to the University in the middle of the course to attend a University tutorial. Yeah, life is busy and complicated.
The work-related course was in a location that was slightly closer to the University, but a location which turned out to be awkwardly located when it came to buses. I looked up the bus options for getting to and from the University and discovered that it would take me roughly half an hour each way ... I also knew that it would take me half an hour each way to walk the distance. I opted to walk.

However, I have managed to get quite a bit of errand walking in. And today, I walked from the university to the nearest spot where I could catch the bus.
I mentioned it elsewhere, but I'll mention it here as well ...
Last weekend, Rowan and I did another car-free trip away.
We flew into Sydney, took the train to where we were staying and walked the remaining distance.
We were in Sydney for a cycling conference which Rowan needed to attend. I attended a few sessions, but spent the rest of my time wandering around Sydney. I also joined the group for lunch and dinner ... and of course we all walked to the restaurants we'd booked. I could be wrong, but I don't think any one at the conference had a motorised vehicle there.

My participation is likely to become less frequent. Not because I've stopped walking, but because I've decided not to try and measure them.

Walked just over 4 miles r/t to the QT to snag a copy of the 'Parade of Homes' catalog (we are hoping to move closer to wife's work ). Then ~mile r/t to see my mom- worked the dog on this one and made him wear his boots to protect him from hot asphalt. Then another 3/4 mile r/t to the store.
First day in a while didn't have a heat advisory, but the heat index was still pushing triple digits by the time I was done.

I was pointed and laughed at by quite a lot of people last night.
Having test-ridden the BMX-like Trek Jet 20 that I had bought for my wife earlier once a couple of weeks ago, for some odd reason, I decided to take it on a longer ride. A grown man (albeit one who, at only 161cm/5'3" tall, is probably shorter than most teenagers) riding a rather colorful 20" kiddo bike is always going to look odd and/or funny, but I kind of enjoyed the attention. I dropped by the Trek dealer for some odds and ends, and even they were entertained by my attempt to ride the three kilometers over there.
Albeit excruciatingly slow - spinning the crank like crazy, going downhill with a slight tail wind, all I could manage was about 11km/h - both the ride and the bike were awesome. I would've been a little happier with longer crank arms and a bigger chain ring, though. The OEM saddle is too small, and the seat post woefully too short, so I used the saddle and extra-long, suspended seat post from my Verve instead. I've got an extra saddle lying around, so I'm planning to find an even longer post, probably even with quite some more setback.

Nearing the end of June ... almost halfway through the year, and I'm at 489.74 km of walking this year so far. Last year this time, I was at 488.65 so I'm keeping pace with last year.
Yesterday's 10.19 km walk/run probably helped.

Rowan and I have been walking to the beach in the evenings ... and in this part of the world, night falls early.

More car free since I got my trailer ...
Today I started out with a little surfing about 10 miles round trip.
Next came a trip to the hardware store and the long way home for a pound of coffee @3 mi.
Then a short ride back to the beach to cast a lure ( no luck) 2mi.
Last was a shopping trip to whole foods for 5 bags of groceries. 3 mi.

Not entirely.
I started walking more in 2003, before the Paris-Brest-Paris because one of the tips I read was that many of the riders spend the day before the start of the PBP walking in Paris, and if they aren't used to walking that much, they can be rather sore when they start the PBP. Plus I heard that cycling on its own wasn't necessarily good for the bones. Walking, running, weightlifting etc. were recommended in addition to cycling. So I figured I'd better get walking!
Then in about 2007, I started making a point of walking at least 15 km/week. It helped that I had to park my car about 2 km from the university 4 days a week for a couple semesters ... that alone gave me 16 km/week. And one semester I moved into the city where I had a fairly lengthy walk to and from the train station. So I just got used to walking.
As you know, in 2009 I developed DVT (a genetic situation I will have to deal with for the rest of my life) and again it was recommended that I walk lots. Not too long after, we moved into the town where I worked and I started walking to and from work 3 km/day 5 days a week.
These days, I take the bus into the city where I work, but I walk part of my commute, walk at lunch, and walk between uni and work ... or on a day like today when I have a late lecture, I walk to one of the main roads where I can catch my bus home. That's about 1.7 km with a good, steep climb at the end.
I'd like to commute by bicycle, but there are a number of difficulties involved in that, so I figured I would at least keep active during the day by lots of brisk walking and climbing stairs. Good for the circulation, good for the bones, and good for the muscles too.
It's winter here, and so in the evenings we've been riding our trainers (Rowan's on rollers) + lifting weights sometimes, or going to the gym to run and row sometimes, or walking down to the beach and back on rest days. Plus longer, more challenging rides on weekends.
But last week, I got a bit of food poisoning the previous weekend, and was barely recovering from that when I had a rather frightening allergic reaction to a short course of antibiotics I was put on for another issue. So, my week was mainly walking ... which was a bit of a struggle. No energy to do much else.
Fortunately this week I feel so much better and we're back on the trainers again!

Even so, logging my activities also gets me moving more. Whenever I've stopped logging it, my exercise has eventually declined. So, as much as it is a bother and nuisance, I'm going to keep up with the daily mesurement and log entries. (I actually record only the time I spend on exercise, not the distance or intensity.)

You certainly seem to have a good balance of exercise, not just riding.
I need to remind myself about the need for walking or other load bearing exercise for the strength of my bones. I need to do more. A 120 mile ride, including getting ready, and putting the gear away, can take most of a day.

I'm with you. I usually don't bother to take a computer with me on a ride or walk.
But...One can take one's computer (cell phone or tablet) and automatically calculate and record the time and distance for their exercise journal.

No riding to work this week - just walking to the bus stop. I had an annoying series of flats Sunday and Monday AM and no backup bike - loaned one out and the other needs parts. So it's been the bus all this week. I suppose I could have sorted it out by now but I will on the weekend. I had some long days and couldn't find the 20" Presta tube and 406-40 tire I need at a couple of bike stores, so later today I should get them at a store known to cater to folders. It was also actually also pretty hot for riding, although, in fact, taking the bus I sweat almost as much!

Steel City, Steel Bike
Last night walked to/from Target to get a jumbo pack of paper towels I don't have a way to strap to my bike (yet! growth mindset). Today used my bike to deliver a loaf of homemade bread to a friend who's moving. His neighborhood is on the top of a hill, 300 ft climb in the last 1.5 miles with a couple of switchbacks. It wasn't so bad until the last quarter mile which was a cobblestone street with crappy broken down sidewalk. Pretty area though, in a broken down kind of way. I didn't get a picture but here's street view: https://goo.gl/maps/b5vDdqHkckm And of course the ride down was lovely, once I got back to pavement! Still pretty warm here but cloudy. Really beautiful and seemed to fit the landscape.

I rode approx 1 mile r/t with my worksman adaptable trike today. Second half had about 70 lbs of groceries.
