Schwinn Collegiate 1970 Step Thru

Saw this on Craig's list, a 5 speed derailleur, brown, with the generator headlight in pristine condition. Talking with the owner, will see if I can pick this up tonight.
Read a thread from user Vintage Schwinn, had plenty info on these bikes, I know it's bomb proof, gave the thumbs up on that 5 speed & the gear range for the derailleur.

Looks like it is in great shape. What color is the seat. It is possible that it has darkened or turned over the years. The color is molded into the seat and the white is painted.

The chrome looks really good. Chestnut brown is the color. Some people call it Root Beer brown.

Thanks, I looked close at the pics and just wow, does look new. New tires, brakes, the owner went through it, gave it a "tune up". Want to polish & wax it, but really want to go ride.
Will see if I can get it tonight 🙂😉

Not sure, seat looks black.? Waiting for a call to see about picking this up. He's out of town but will make arrangements with a friend.
Hard to find a bike anywhere!

So I picked it up, very nice shape, did a little test run down the sidewalk, wheels spin very true, nice catch!
Ron was out of town but a friend of his came to show it, on her bicycle of course, good people.
Couldn't wait to ride so stopped in Walmart parking lot about 20 miles up the road from my house, going give it a spin 😀

The old Collegiates were bombproof like their Varsity cousins. The only potential hitch in your gitalong is that it has the now-rare Schwinn-size 26 x 1 3/8" (S-6) tires. These are not interchangeable with the more-common 26 x 1 3/8" (EA-3) tires.

If you're an insomniac, here's why: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

There are still a couple of Kenda tires that will fit: https://www.harriscyclery.net/produc...n-s-6-1836.htm

It looks like you had Ziggy use his time machine to go back to 1970 and get it and bring it to you today. It is beautiful!!!

1970 is when the Schwinn Collegiate became great! (GT-100 by Shimano rear derailleur and 32T first gear......32-14 model J freewheel)

The 1970 and later Collegiates (and five speed Suburbans too) were the most bombproof of all Schwinns ever built........BETTER THAN VARSITIES due to having the much better Shimano rear derailleurs than the Huret Allvit that the Varsity got unless the factory production line was out of Allvits and then substituted the Collegiate's shimano built derailleur for Varsity on that day.
-------the 1964 to 1969 Collegiates are equal to the Varsity in "Bombproof-ness". The 1970 Collegiate onward and the Five Speed Suburbans are far superior to the VARSITY and CONTINENTAL, and are the most durable and Bombproof derailleur equipped multi-speed bicycles of all time!
