GRX 11-speed crankset with 10-speed Tiagra 4700

I've got Tiagra 4700 ten-speed on my gravel bike. Currently running 46/34 chain rings. I'd like to go to GRX 46x30 crankset, but all I am finding used or new is the 11-speed version. I know that general thought is that it's not much of a problem to use an 11-speed crankset with a ten speed chain. Just being curious if anyone here has done that with GRX? I'd also think that getting 11-speed now would make it easier to upgrade in the future if I want to go that way.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Yes, I'm aware GRX cranks also require GRX front derailleur due to the slightly wider chain line.

I had Tiagra 10-spd and just upgraded the Crank, FD, and RD to GRX400 10-spd. It's a beauty and cost me very little given it is compatible with the existing hydraulic shifters. New rings are 46/30. I didn't consider what you're suggesting re: 11-spd chainset - can't think of why it wouldn't work.

There are several sub compact non-GRX cranks that offer 30-46 gearing and will work with your current shifters & derailleur. FSA, and Easton both have great options that will be less expensive and faster to change. with 30-46 gearing you will have to get used to vastly different shifting patterns for the terrain you ride and will quickly find yourself shifting up to the big ring in front when the hill ends. I currently use 30-46 and when I changed it was like instantly getting in shape! I did not ride any slower, but I was able to run a higher cadence on hills and did not have to immediately drop to my lowest gear on every hill. With the right cadence on a hill you retain more endurance for longer rides. I do not miss my top 2 gears at all, and I spend a lot more time on my big ring in the middle of the cassette.

With a 30-46 crank on the small ring you likely will have 4 or 5 gears lower than your lowest gear on your big ring.

You likely will have to lower your front derailleur though for propper shifting on the smaller rings but that is a quick change...

I use a 46/30T GRX (11-speed) crankset with my otherwise Ultegra drivetrain (including front derailleur) without issues. I think it would be fine to use the 11-speed crankset with a 10-speed drivetrain. I wouldn't go the other way around, however, and if you can find it, the 10-speed might be slightly cheaper. (I got the 11-speed for $150, and like it better than my $500 White Industries crankset with 46/30T. )

Just get it and see if it works with your existing setup. If you can adjust the H-limit on your current derailleur +3mm, you should be totally fine with your current derailleur.

I've used a 10sp shimano crank with 11sp shimano shifting.
Also used a praxis 11sp crank with shimano 11sp shifting.

Both work flawelessly.

FWIW I am running a GRX 11sp crank on a vintage road bike with 8sp 600 with no issue. Also have 2 bikes running 11sp XT cranks with 10sp chains and cassettes with no issues. GRX is friction, XT is indexed.

Thanks DorkDisk . I'm not too worried about it, but it's nice to hear that it works for others which is why I posted.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback and additional ideas.

I'm fully aware of the gearing differences and combinations if I switch to the smaller inner ring. That's exactly why I'm looking to do this. I'm not racing this bike so the bigger front shifting jump and some duplicate gearings are no big deal. That's no different than with the 50/34 on my road bike.

The GRX 11-speed is the only thing I can find at the moment at a reasonable price. They are going for $109 shipped via eBay stores. I had bid on a used one but it sold for over $100 with shipping which was beyond my max bid. I'll spend an extra $10 for new w/warranty. The 10-speed cranks I've seen are more expensive and shipping from Taiwan which could take weeks to show up. I've asked at three LBS and they can't get there hands on either anytime soon.

The Easton EA90 is more than I'd like to spend. Their list price is $119 for cranks arms plus $149 for a set of rings. Plus I'd need a new bottom bracket for the 30mm spindle. And also a 16mm allen wrench to set the torque cap. That may sound silly but it's still another $6-$8 added cost. (I talked to a friend on Saturday who's new bike has the EA90 crank - he wanted to change to a 1x but couldn't because he couldn't find a 16mm wrench at two bike shops, an auto repair garage, or his local Home Depot. He had to order one from Amazon for delivery today.)

I've looked at the FSA Omega and Gossamer adventure cranks. I saw a Gossamer (which is 48/32) for $135 but only had 165mm arm length in stock which is too short for me. Again with either of those I'd need a new bottom bracket. The Omega uses a MegaExo 19mm spindle and the Gossamer is the BB386EVO.

So that's why my focus is on the Shimano GRX at the moment. It works with my existing bottom bracket which has thousands of more miles left in it. And it "might" work with my existing Tiagra front derailleur. And I'm seeing the GRX-FD400 selling for about $35 if it's needed.

Thanks again.

I was not able to get the 10-speed GRX crank to play nice with the Tiagra FD. I had to change crank back to Tiagra until I got my GRX-FD400.

10 speed and 11 speed double cranksets have the same chainring spacing at 7.9mm between the rings. There is effectively no difference between them, aside from the chainline difference with the GRX.

Is the 11 speed GRX available with 46/30? I am only seeing 48/32, which annoys me.

810 is 48/32, 600 is avalable in 46/30

Thanks, that's what I have been seeing. Drives the cost of the 810 up quite a bit, because I would much prefer 46 and 30 tooth chain rings

I hear ya; I went with Easton EC90 and dropped some weight. EA90s weigh the same as 810s. But yeah, had to buy some new tools.
