Bikesdirect chrome durability

Bikesdirect has been selling chrome bikes for a few years now— how does the finish hold up in hard use? The main appeal of a chrome bike for me is that it's theoretically more durable since it won't get chipped or scratched as easily as paint-- has the chrome peeled or scratched or gotten rusty or pitted in anyone's experience? Pictures of multiple-year-old BD chrome frames would be appreciated too.

The chrome is actually pretty decent. It holds up significantly better than the paint does from the handful of examples around work.

Chrome is naturally durable finish BTW.

Why oh why am I reminded of the 80's bikes, particularly Japanese, where the chrome came out of a spray ***.

Which BRAND are you asking about? The quality could vary greatly.

Oh, I got caught by the naughty word filter did I? Naughty me, I should have said "paint spraying implement".

The Kilo TT (full and partially chromed) and the Motobecane CXX both look like Maxway frames— do you think the durability would differ much?

If both are made by the same builder and the chrome plating is sourced from the same vendor, then no. I was just pointing out that chrome plating durability can vary tremendously from one souce to another depending on a number of factors. I'm sorry I can't answer your question, I have no experience with either bike.

I'm pretty sure all the steel Bikesdirect frames are from the same Taiwanese factories.

Buddy has had a chrome kilo tt for 3 years or so. The chrome is plenty durable. Certainly seems more durable than most bike paint
