PSA: Safety in the Berkeley Hills, recent armed bike thefts

I know this probably belongs in Regional Discussions or in the Safety section, but I thought it would be worthwhile to try and get more folks to see this prior to the weekend, and this forum gets more traffic. (May I humbly plead with moderators that you hold off moving this thread until Monday?)

Here is a story from Berkeleyside about three recent armed bike thefts during daylight hours in the Berkeley Hills. Please be safe out there, everyone...

thanks for posting

this is the worst news of this sort since the event many years back when a mentally unstable lady on psychoactive medications intentionally plowed her automobile into a group of riders on a training ride along Danville Boulevard

one or two were sons of Albert Eisentraut; IIRC one rider was killed and two were seriously maimed...

one more reason to pedal a cycle lacking in eye appeal...

In iffy areas, always ride in the daylight and do not ride alone (A group, preferably).....
The Berkeley hills has a long running history of such crimes occurring regularly.

Well that sucks. Be safe out there.

What!? I've lived in the Berkeley Hills near these bike theft locations for over 20 years and there is no long running history of any such thing.

I rode 3 or 4 times a week when I was in grad school there, and never heard of anything like that.

Next time I ride in the Berkeley hills, I'm riding with Dave. Roving bands of thieves are clearly afraid of him.

Hits home with me. I did a very dumb thing earlier this evening. Ran out of light and was waiting for the train in a super sketchy part of town, alone with my Bertoni. Was accosted by two ... men. I'm okay, but I've learned my lesson.
