Velocio (Paul de Vivie), in the pages of Le Cycliste, championed multiple gears. Henri Desgrange, in L'Equipe, disparaged the idea. Working their readers up in the pages of their respective magazines, they met in a classic 'single combat' trial in 1902. As his champion, Desgrange (that's right, the future Tour de France guy) had recruited French cycle racer Edouard Fischer to ride his fixed gear entry. Velocio's three-speed machine was ridden by...Mademoiselle Marthe Hesse! As related to the English speaking world by Clifford Graves: over a mountainous course of 150 miles (including two climbs over the Col du Tourmalet), Mademoiselle Hesse trounced Monsieur Fischer. It took Desgrange another 35 years to get over the sting of this embarrassment.

Yep. L'impertinente's Terrot is a dual chain two-speed with climbing gear. The Terrot was a gold medal winner (that Medaille D'Or mentioned at the bottom of the poster) at the Touring Club de France's trials.

This is most likely around the time of Mao's "Cultural Revolution." Young cadres firing SKS Type-56 rifles while mounted. Note the high tension tower in the background and flowers in the foreground. Political art at its finest.

Having seen a lot of old bike posters, I continue to be puzzled about why they were often based on racy female poses. One of the strangest ones is this one, from 1897, that features a nude lady chained to a well. I just don't understand the symbolism. I have heard that sex sells, but bondage!?

Here's a reportedly circa 1905 poster for Presto bicycles. It compares the Presto to the new technological marvel, the airplane, claiming, "without motor, without wings and just as fast". The fact that a hobo owns one attests to its affordability (or did he just assault and steal it from that person lying in the road). Based on the Blériot XI style monoplane, I believe the poster is actually circa 1909, exploiting the 1st successful crossing of the English channel by airplane
