The others can chime in, but my primitive understanding is that if you are running disc brakes (FUTURE!) the thru axles are much more rigid and able to handle the forces that are placed on the axle compared to a traditional QR based axle.

Not for nothing, but if ramen was popular back in my freshmen college days I too probably would have made it a staple, out of necessity, because once the school cafeteria closed down for the night the only option was to raid the local Seven-Eleven.

One year, I and other rag tag locals rode behind the 7-11 squad the day before the U.S. Pro Championship road race, which ended up being help in Philly for many years. They were easily spinning along and chatting at around 23 mph. We were nearly puking up our guts trying to hang on the back. I didn't even own a cycling jersey back then. Must have been '87, which means Heiden would have been on the squad. He had won the previous year. IIRC, in '87 he tore the upper from the sole of a shoe during the final sprint and could not repeat his previous year's victory.

That's my primitive understanding too. All that QR play is gone and everything lines up perfectly each time you put the wheel on, assuming that's how you set it up.

There's also a minuscule possibility that disc brakes, being SO DAMN STRONG, could pull a QR wheel out of the dropout, so the primary benefit of TAs is to cover the manufacturer's ass and minimize liability.

I used to pound ramen when I was younger because it was fast and easy. Now that I'm "older" one pack of that stuff will send me into a full-body funk for 12 hours or more. If I eat one before bed, my heartbeat will keep me awake for hours then I'll wake up the next morning in a cold sweat.
