Six weeks is freaking impressive! I'll be happy with my planned section/distance. Either my 29er or a Fatbike my wife says I can get...

About a month ago, I showed my old size 54 pants with 46s and 40s.

Well. How about 38s?

I wish I could describe how much better I feel without sounding obsessed, or cliche... But I really do. I do need to ride more. Get on the gym more.

But I do so much more than I did a year ago as it is...

Feeling pretty good tonight... Tuesday I hit my 1 year mark for surgery. We had a shift change at work for this week. Evenings instead of days. Made for a bit of a struggle for me and food. Messed with my food clock badly... So the picture above left was 2 years ago. The above right was this evening. Sometimes it's tough to believe either pic is me. I'm about to seek counseling for body dysmorphia. It took me years to see how big I got. And struggling with still seeing that guy in the mirror.

Today I had my one year follow up with my surgeon and nutritionist. The nutritionist and I discussed food strategies for exercise. And she is researching a couple things for me. But in the meantime, she is happy with my food and snack choices, and only needs me to work on things I still struggle with. Eating too fast, and drinking while I eat. Both no-nos in the bariatric surgery world.

Sitting with my surgeon, we discussed my BP and resting heart rates before surgery, and now after. BP on meds before surgery, 152/85. Now routinely 100/65 and no meds. RHR before was 105. Now 65... We discussed the cardiology docs notes, the sleep docs notes. And went over the blood work. He mentioned it was obvious I am using all my vitamins and supplements as prescribed. I am well below his weight loss expectations, and that makes him very happy. And I hope to have more to share with him in a year, when he wants to see me again.

One of his PAs, used to be my PA at my local clinic. We talked years ago about weight loss and exercise, but my insurance wouldn't cover weight loss things at that time. Anyway, she still lives nearby, and we have some common friends, and cycling friends. The cycling friends have let her keep tabs on me, and she kept hoping we'd get to ride together at some point. She is a triathlete, teaches spin class and such. Certainly, I'd have my work cut out for me!

All on all, a pretty good day for me... So I splurged a bit for dinner and a little extra snack. I just need to get back on track tomorrow. Bike ride planned with my daughter for the afternoon. But a MTB ride in the morning. Weather turns on Sunday. Time to see if my sensor experiment bears fruit...

Nicely done, ZJ.

Great effort, great results. It's good to see the bloodwork numbers are all panning out the way you'd hoped, too. Just as nice, those 38 slacks. (That's a 16" drop from peak, right there.)

As the docs tell us: diet 'n' exercise.

Zjrog I'm at 243lbs and fighting the demons. It has been a slow but steady loss of weight. I'm upping my bicycle miles and walking to make up for some of the calories that disappear when you lose weight. Myfitnesspal allocates calories by your weight. The less you weigh the less calories you get. I have been slowly adjusting portion size. Everything is a program that must be modified and changed slowly or you will fail the first time. Sometimes I fail anyway but keep adjusting portion size, exercise, and eating times to fool myself into losing even more weight. Blood pressure is down to 126/80 with medication. Hoping to keep lowering this and get rid of some meds in the future. Since I now believe that I will be keeping a food diary the rest of my life then it is just a matter of perseverance and honesty in reporting that keeps the weight in check. You are doing great. Keep up the good work.

Brother, do I know those demons!

I measure or weigh my food from time to time. More to keep me honest with my visual quantity calibration... The diary is hit and miss. I was really good and on it for a solid 6 months. Whenever I feel like I'm not on track, I diary for a few days. Keeps me honest.

It is amazing how good things you eat can sneak up on you and not be so good...

So, demons were mentioned. For me, the demon I fight most are stalls. 6 weeks ago I broke a second stall. Hit 243. Which created a third. Anytime I lose 5 or 6 pounds at a time, I tend to stall. You the same 2 or 3 pounds. Frustrating when I'm doing everything right otherwise...

Well. Broke that stall. The net loss from the beginning of this stall is only 2 pounds. But for the last 2 weeks, I was back at 246. But I'm ok with that. Because I feel really good right now.

So seeing 241 yesterday was really exciting.

After some failed experiments with my magnetic trainers, I looked for a used Kurt Kinetic Road Machine fluid trainer. At $90, it was impossible to say no to.

And I placed the Kinetic iNride sensor on it (from my failed experiments). So I still don't have a true "Smart" trainer, but at least now I have reliable power output numbers for training purposes. Plus, the fluid trainer really feels A LOT different than my mag... I could push a 52/12 gear at level 5 on my mag trainer. It will be a very long time before I do that gear on the fluid...

Much easier to understand the correlation of power output to heart rate. Hard numbers to train with. My aim is to start with cadence training then work my way to HIIT And fartleks...

My old Performance mag trainer locked both ends of the bike in place. I will miss that solid feel.

My wife if 36 years gave me something to ponder. Since my birthday is just a couple weeks after Christmas, she has given me something bigger to open on my birthday. This year, she offered a choice. A new firearm, or a Fat Bike... Hey. N+1 applies to both categories. This is going to be an interesting decision. Years past, there was always a clear answer. This will be tough...

Zjrog my weakness is musical instruments. But, a real tough choice would be a new Rivendell bicycle or a new instrument. I would break a sweat trying to choose. I hit 241lbs this week and am trying for 240lbs. My latest BP test at Walmart was 124/74. As with all things nowadays anything over 120 is classified as high blood pressure. These new lower BP standards have to do with testing that found that heart attacks and strokes were more prevalent over 120. The also found that dementia was less of a problem with lower BP. Even as a skinny kid my BP was 120 or above. This is similar to the fasting blood sugar test. Years ago 120mg/dl was considered pre diabetic but they changed that to 100mg/dl. I've been at 106 to 108mg/dl for years. The standard was changed a few years ago and now I'm pre diabetic. So now I'm losing all that weight and see if I can fit into these newer standards. I'm glad I can ride year round here. The rain of course is a pain. It can get down to freezing and I have to wear mitts on my hands and bomber hats to keep my ears and face warm. I'm trying not to make the audience laugh, this is California. I grew up in Reno Nevada and we had snow, ice, freezing winds, -10 degree winter temps, very miserable winter riding. I really like your instrumentation and the information it provides. I only use a cycling speedometer/computer. No power or heart information, just average speed, distance and time. The time is only the wheel spinning time, not rest stops. I use my phones stopwatch to keep track of overall time. Some cyclometers keep track of both times. I'm looking into getting some sort of power meter to install on a bicycle for training purposes. Keep up the good work on your dieting and your cycling.

@tallbikeman, congrats on continued weight loss! I never really paid too much attention to BP until I got heavy. Heart rate was my gold standard of fitness until 10 years ago. Then BP and my fitness went sour... With my glucose over 120 for years, this past year it has dropped to 95. Even at the doctor the other day BP was 115/60 @ 65 heart rate. And that is me in pain...

N+1 is a fun way to look at most anything. Musical instruments, I have my Great Granddad's fiddle. Every time I'm tempted to see if it can be made playable, I wonder if I could even learn it. Dad was a music teacher. A band master. Of course, I played. All brass. But my favorite was a double French Horn. I had one for years after high school. But it was stolen during a move 30 years ago. I highly doubt I could play anymore. Still. I see one every now and again, wistfully think back to a simple time...

I was up .6 pound yesterday. 242. Not upset. I had a busy week, and ate to handle the work of the day as needed.

Having a tough time figuring out Rouvy. Stuck in a loop on my laptop. Choose a ride, select trainer and sensors, hit Start Training, and back to select trainer. Over and over again... Frustrating.

As a sometimes data nerd, Golden Cheetah seems to be that cat's meow. I can't produce enough data presently to fill in all the blanks! It has a steep learning curve, but is free... All the data available is a far cry from my first Cateye Micro...

I trained as a classical flautist as a kid but mostly play guitar, cello, flute, recorder now. I go to various kinds of music jams. Bluegrass, Americana, even a jam dedicated to playing music for Contra dancers. I play classical music with our local recorder society and with friends. I'm in three different groups of musicians and play almost every day. But I'm not addicted, Oh No!! I hear you on the tech stuff. I think it is an evil plot to occupy our time with tech that never quite works but suckers you along. The goal is to see how long you can be suckered along. Some tech is righteous and other horrible. When it works it is great. Sometimes I miss one sentence in the instructions and spend a month or two figuring it out or even giving up only to find out I was the problem. Other times there seems to be no real solution to tech problems. I use a Cateye micro wireless and love it. Too bad I can't download directly to the internet from it. It doesn't have GPS but I don't need that. Watching my caloric intake today trying to leave at least 500 calories uneated. Hastens the weight loss a little.

I finally got it figured out... Seems the default setting in Rouvy is for a Bluetooth dongle, instead of the native Windows BT... Changed it back to Windows and the laptop built in BT BLE, and everything connected. I do not know why the ANT+ sensors didn't automatically connect, they were visible. Zwift picked them up instantly, as did Golden Cheetah.

Sure makes me feel accomplished...

Slogging away on the trainer, I have come to realize... The ROCK on this bike sucks. My formerly fat posterior is unhappy with this seat... I need a newer rock than this 21 year old.

Test results from the other day, blood work looks great, I might have been a little dehydrated that day. But the swab culture of my toe wound came back with a staph infection, as we suspected. Just happy it wasn't MRSA. Podiatrist reviewed my toe xrays, referred me to orthopedics. Now, maybe someone can answer why my toe grew over 3/8" these last 2 years...

That toe. A comment from my doc last week regarding losing the toe, had me thinking all week. Then Thursday, I got a call for an orthopedic consult for the whole foot and ankle. Amazingly, an appointment was available the following day.

First off. After that visit, I want the tip of this toe removed. The toe has not grown, but the big toe has pulled back over the years, aggravated by the compression of the joint circled in the collage above. Even if this toe heals, it will get an ulcer again. And again. So. Decision made. Waiting on a date.

Next. The ankle is in far far worse condition than I imagined. Fusion is the best option. But the time from work going to be a tough thing. The recovery process will be longer and harder than knee replacement. I don't know if I'm a candidate for ankle replacement or not. I do know that replacement doesn't have the best track record or longevity. For this, I am seeking additional opinions. The ortho center I was in yesterday works with Olympic athletes. Even so, there is another Ortho hospital I want to talk with, as well as my own ortho I have used for my left knee replacement. And will for my right knee.

Also Thursday. I hurt my left forearm. Pulled and maybe tore a part of the muscle. Not fun. Pretty uncomfortable.

The bruising only started showing today. I have full range of motion, good strength. But it is sore, and hurts when I try to lift or move light weights. I saw my GP doc yesterday for it. One of her comments was, with my now skinny arms, we'd see a knot or other misplaced issue under my skin, and the bruising would have been immediate and large and severe. Not to mention far more painful.

Feeling sorry for myself yesterday. I stopped in my local bike shop. I took a Diamondback fat bike for a ride. Whoa! Easier to ride than I expected. But much heavier than my 29er. I didn't get to ride in dirt, but I did ride it down 4 steps. Or maybe I should say GLIDE down... I want one!

So yeah. I ate too much yesterday. And I don't feel bad about it...

Took the Monster Cross out for likely my last outdoor ride of the year. Some nice people were doing family photos and they took a picture for me after my ride. Of some irritation, the bike has shifted fine all year. But yesterday I couldn't shift into the small ring. So it wasn't any fun in the rocks.

Scale stayed the same again. 241.6. But I needed another pair of jeans, so went and bought a pair of 38s. 38s. Just 13 months ago I was in 54s!

So tomorrow is Toesday...

Losing the last bone in my 2nd toe on my left foot. I've had an ulcer for a few months on the end of it. It has been infected but never healed. Even if it heals, it is going to get another ulcer, and could get infected worse. It sticks out beyond the big toe, which is a problem in itself. I'm not diabetic. Thank goodness. I do have non diabetic neuropathy in both feet.

I really doubt I get any more outdoor riding this year. Andcaftervtonight on the trainer, I doubt I ride indoors much before the end of the year. If at all.

Wow, what's the outlook on how that will affect your walking? It seems like hopefully cycling would not be affected, but I dont' know

Losing the tip of the 2nd toe should have no effect on walking or cycling.

Since surgery yesterday, or Toesday as I now call it, I am pain free. None. So far. No weight bearing on that foot till Friday, then only on my heel for 2 weeks. Friday I can get on my indoor bike as long as I use my heel...

So sorry to hear about the surgery. On the other hand you are doing well and healing. I have neuropathy in both feet also and worry about this type of thing happening. I saw your post about your Monster Cross derailleur failure to perform. My last ride before the rain last week saw me walking my bicycle home. The left crank bolt loosened and fell off the bike. I'm using an ISIS system for the cranks so the crank just fell off the bike. I did not have an allen wrench with which to reinstall the bolt. Luckily I did find the bolt and reinstalled everything at home. Since I do this for the exercise and walking is exercise and I love both activities I wasn't bummed out. I'm at 240lbs and have decided to start shorting myself between 500 and 1000 calories every day to get a little more weight to drop off this body. There is a test I can get done that will accurately tell me my caloric needs and my body fat ratio. But it costs money and I know that if I'm not losing fat very fast eat less and you will speed up the loss. Men are not to eat less than between 1500 and 1800 calories daily because it is unhealthy to do so. Losing weight is such a war. Good to see you out riding. I'll have to get someone to take a picture of me riding so I can post it.

The Monster Cross will get a full teardown over the winter, and new cables throughout. Already got them. I've had the bike for 5 years, and I think it is time for a teardown, clean and lube...

I always carry a Crank Bros multi tool in my seatbag. I've been stranded a long way from help before, think 10 miles... But finding the bolt had to feel good!!!

After surgery the other day, I notice I've retained more water than normal. And of course, holiday eating didn't help much. I was surprised today to have only gained .2 pound for the week, 241.8. Not bad for someone not moving much!!! I had to hop on my riding mower with the snow plow blade Thursday and yesterday thanks to winter storms. So I didn't stress my foot by hopping on the indoor bike yet.

That caloric test is quite accurate, but also quite pricey!!! I have a buddy that does the new so called intermittent fasting. He is very methodical about it, and has dropped 30 pounds since spring. Might be something to consider... Not sure thats a good idea for me and my smaller stomach.

When that ISIS attachment bolt fell off I was on a dedicated paved bicycle trail. The crank started wobbling and I had the weirdest sensation of maybe having a stroke or maybe my leg was spasming and causing me to question my health then the crank just fell off. That got rid of all the health questions. I walked back on the trail about a hundred feet and there it was laying on the roadway. Lucky me for once. I had a couple of miles to walk so I set off. I do carry tools for tire/tube issues but not for mechanical problems. That may change. Regular preventive maintenance would obviate this issue but I don't do regular preventive maintenance. I do oil and clean my chain and wipe off the chain lube grunge regularly and of course tire pressure every ride. I hope your foot doesn't hurt while cycling. Time for me to walk the dogs in the rain so you have a great day.

I pulled the R200 out to clean it since I rearranged the front room to now include a seasonal decorated tree. I am also guilty of a short ride around the neighborhood. Not bad for a gimp in an Air Cast boot...

Yup. Air Cast boot...

Didn't happen if it isn't on Strava...

Back to work today. Toe feels fine, anxious to get the bandages off Friday. The boot is for my ankle. Also anxious for that AFO brace...

that's a pretty severe down-tilt on that saddle -- you don't find yourself sliding forwards?

I did outside, But on the trainer it's good. Strange, I know... I think it's the shape of this seat, I swapped out the original rock that the bike came with, and I need to find a better seat...

First off. Tomorrow is my toe follow up. Toe feels great, but tomorrow I get to see it for the first time. Not sure how I feel about this tonight...

Third night this week on my trainer with Zwift. Punched up to 403 watts and 50 mph tonight. Wife said it sounded pretty intense. Different than the two previous rides. 40.43 miles for the week.

And in weight loss news, no weight loss, sort of stalled. But...

My 2xl bike shorts are quite loose in the legs! Time for new shorts... The Veterans group I ride with is selling cycling kit next month. Time for bibs and a New Jersey! AND... Professional fitting! No guessing...
