I'm using Maxxis Rekon 2.8 on 27.5 rims with 35mm internal width. The traction is great and they work great in rocks and rough terrain. The downside is they seem to climb slowly on smooth dirt or pavement. I've never ridden a 29er so I can't comment there.
From what I read plus tires are mostly for hardtails and e-bikes these days.
I thought about trying some 2.6 or even 2.4 tires but I don't know haw much I would gain and I would hate to give up that traction.
I run 15 psi in the front and 17-20 in the rear.

My bike has a 160mm fork and 150mm rear travel.

I love riding with 27.5x3.0 tires on 40mm rims on mine. It will only fit a 29x2.3 in the back, which is unfortunate. I have a good carbon 29" wheelset with 30mm rims that I think would be great on a hardtail with 2.6 tires. It's also fully rigid, but I'm considering a 120mm fork, which is what it is designed for.

I test rode a Specialized Fuse with 29x2.6" tires and a 120mm fork and it was a lot of fun to ride. that bike will also work with 27.5x3.0, but I didn't get to try it that way. I think that is a good setup for playing on flowy to moderately technical singletrack. Some of the newer hardtails are made more for fast downhill performance and they have very slack front ends with 140-160mm forks and "long, slack, low and tight" geometry. Sounds like fun, but not for me.

29x2.1 seems best for fast rolling and 27.5x3.0 seems best for smooth running and outrageous grip in corners and climbing. It all depends on what you want to do and what will fit on your bike.

BluesDawg, thanks for your detailed answer. I will soon retire and will need to sell some bikes.
This season i went to 3 demos but no HT was available. I did a serious try, trading with a friend for 2 weeks
and i enjoyed his 120 mm 27.5x3.0/2.8rear. I am attracted to a HT about 120-130 but on 29x2.6.
In Nov/Dec i might get a used one or an unsold for a decent price.
This might become my main bike.
Going down fast is not my thing and long suspensions do not attract me.

I'm running Maxxis Minion DHF WT EXO 2.5" / Aggressor WT EXO 27.5" on a 35 rim with a RockShox Yari RC 160mm fork. Plenty of traction and pretty smooth ride.

I’m on a HT, Specialized Chisel 29’er, 100mm travel fork, Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.35 tires F&R, tubeless at around 22-25 psi.

I opted for 29 vs. 27.5 as I wanted the roll over obstacle advantage of the larger wheel. I ride a lot of routes and logs on Long Island. I was coming from 26” and felt like why go part way.

The Nobby Nics are a favorite tire for Long Island riding.
