Nice read. Is the author of the piece "that" Gary Fisher?
And I like this "Some riders feel the 42 tooth crankset and the 28 teeth on the rear do not give them low enough gearing for touring." Count me as one of the "some people".

I believe so. I seem to remember a short blurb in an issue introducing Gary Fisher as a new road test writer, but I can't find it.
I think his first Road Test for Bicycling! was in the Jul 1976 issue (https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ane-600-a.html)
Of course, @Repack Rider could provide the definitive answer.

The first article I ever had published was a story I had written about the Repack races. Gary offered to take it to the Bicycling offices. They bought it, and my own writing career began.

While I was on the road with the Sons of Champlin in 1977 I wrote about the "Repack" races that I was then promoting. I had never written anything for publication before that, and I had no target for my writing. I just wanted to document this insane, goofy hobby of racing downhill on fat-tire bikes. Gary took my essay with him to the Bicycling offices, and they published it, my first paid article.
Gary is not the writer I am. His articles had to be dictated and then massaged into useful form, but his knowledge of bicycle mechanics is astonishing, so he kept the job.
Gary dumped most of his file collection on me at the Mountain Bike Legacy Project. Going through his material the other day I found a wonderful collection of the '60s NCCA newsletters.

Bicycling Magazine started life in the '60s as the Northern California Cycling Association Newsletter. For a while the office was in San Rafael. Gary helped out there with technical issues. When Rodale Press bought the magazine and turned it into Bicycling, Gary kept up his association even though it now meant travel between California and Emmaus.
While I was on the road with the Sons of Champlin in 1977 I wrote about the "Repack" races that I was then promoting. Really cool article! It was fascinating to see how did the bicycles look like back to those days. And English in this essay sounds pretty old-fashioned but still fabulous. Maybe it will be a great idea to write a store about the evolution of bicycles since 18 century to nowadays. I`m keen on cycling it`s the best way to rest for me, so I have lots of thoughts about this topic, but it would be hard for me to get them together, so maybe i should use some kind of essay writing service uk to make a good story based on my mind. What if it`ll become popular,ahah?

Well as much as I dote on the many Italian built rides I have, my later Davidson Impulse is easily in the top 3 of all my bikes in terms of feeling good out on the road.
