Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nope. That's to get the tape back into the cassette after the player has wrapped the tape around its spindles a few hundred times

I know what you mean. Here in the SF Bay Area, we've been suffering with low-to-mid 80s and almost no humidity. And then, when the sun goes down, we cool off to a frigid 65-67 degrees. It really sucks

We're gonna head up to Williams, AZ for a couple of nights escape from the brutal heat down here. PHX is looking at 110, 109, 113, but Williams has proper weather:

UE8/11

85° /54°
Mostly sunny and warm
0%

WED8/12

86° /57°
Warm with plenty of sunshine
4%

THU8/13

87° /57°
Warm with partial sunshine
9%

How often do you guys beat up RD hangers? Shop called and said mine was bent. I suppose that could be from the topple on Thursday, but man, it seems like mine is bent any time anyone looks at it.

I pay enough in taxes of one sort or another that the state and/or county should PROVIDE ME with a good surface!

Fellow Sun Devil!! Finished my undergrad at ASU long before Lake Tempe existed. So, I am very familiar with the brutal weather in Phoenix (and then, in the winter, riding my motorcycle down Scottsdale Rd. to campus having to navigate thru 2 ft. of flooding on the north side of the bridge over the Salt River). Also took my Triumph out to Parker Dam on a Labor Day weekend and nearly passed out by the time I got to Quartzite, it was so hot and draining (I10 stopped at Tonopah). Also took a trip *around* the Superstitions 1 day. Rode out to Apache Junction (no freeway back then) over to Roosevelt Dam (mostly gravel road), down to Globe/Miami and back around to Apache Junction. Great day ride but for the run out to Roosevelt Lake.

Learned to ski at the AZ Snowbowl. Loved the Verde River/Valley, Oak Creek Canyon, Superstitions. Always amazed on 17 heading north popping up onto the plateau and on into Flagstaff with all the pine trees. Beautiful country, lots of good memories...but glad to be in the Bay Area.

I know the theory, but it seems like mine are constantly out of alignment. There must be a way they can be made strong enough to not bend under normal use.

I've tweaked a few. Bench vise + Crescent wrench, or hammer + garage floor, then fine tune with a park Derailleur hanger alignment tool or by screwing a 10mm axle of a rear wheel into the derailleur bolt hole and eyeballing things.

Hammering on them or bending them back does increase the chance of complete hanger failure, but I like living on the edge.

True, that. But then I learned a long time ago that getting out and riding at sunrise is usually quiet (occasionally there's a bit of a breeze), fresh, cool air, and minimal traffic (and idiot drivers on the road...increases the odds of survival on a ride . Breezes usually don't start until early afternoon.

The one on my Ellsworth seems to mysteriously tweak itself out of alignment on occasion. I wonder sometimes if it's about to kick the bucket. Not totally sure if that's an indicator of such, however.

Since it's had an unknown life before I got it I suppose I should dig up a replacement or two sometime.

If you're bending it on a road bike and not banging it into anything maybe you could have someone make one for you out of a stronger metal. It's one of the few things I haven't had trouble with. I was in the mountains with some people I didn't really know and a lady bent hers somehow and I encouraged her friend to bend it back and it snapped off. Oops.

Although on my route home, one of the main roads is undergoing some full depth repairs on the concrete.

Big lane-width sections taken out all the way down, looks like around 18" - and I saw what happens to a minivan if you attempt to drive over one
