Look at this one: https://denver.craigslist.org/bik/d/...557378107.html - GMC Denali for literally more ($175) than I can buy it new on Amazon ($166).

Same with this: https://boulder.craigslist.org/bop/d...515136738.html - Ultegra crank for $300? Really? I can find that at a number of US sellers for under $200 and a few UK based ones for ~$160.

I get it - some things hold value. I sold a very good condition 1986 Fuji Del Ray that was just my dicking around bike (to the bars, usually) for $180 that was overall in good condition - just needed new tires and brakes. But from my research when I sold it, it was actually a pretty decent road bike for its time. But your run of the mill stuff, especially when it's a mass-produced non-vintage bike, it just doesn't make sense. Why would I spend $400 on a 11-12 year old bike that was originally $600 when $500 gets you a much better bike (component wise) from Bikes Direct.

Or in the LeTour's case, you can scroll just a little bit farther down and find a Litespeed with Dura Ace for $980.

Probably one of the best things I've seen here is someone saying that a good quality vintage bike holding its value means that the price now is the same as it was new, maybe a bit higher. For instance, I bought my chrome 1977 Super Le Tour 12.2 last year for $350 -- brand new in 1977 this bike would have been $280. I maybe paid a little much, but the condition demanded a bit of a premium.

But hey, more power to that person if they do get $2600 for a Le Tour. I'll watch the listing and see if I can pull the same trick

I'd say it's akin to cars. A 1998 Ford Mustang isn't worth much of anything. A 1965 Ford Mustang in good condition is worth 10x its original price. Yet, I'm sure that whatever your average 4-door sedan was in the 60's isn't worth nearly as much, especially if it's not in good condition.

When I look at used bikes on CL, I figure I've gotta put at least $70 in to it, unless it was maintained well. New tires, tubes, brake pads, cables, handlebar tape, chain, etc. That's why when I see these late model (10-15 year old) road bikes and they're asking high amounts, I just laugh. By the time you put new stuff on them and spend the time to tune them up, you could get something new online or from Nashbar/Performance.

Nothing too outlandish here. Photos?

What I thought was interesting was the way the ad text was written, so one would have to read the whole thing just to find the asking price.

$200 fender set? I suppose everything is pretty custom with single side mount fenders, so the asking price can be anything.

Of course, not a lot of attention to detail with punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

expedition cattrike for sale - $1 (junction city)

So I have a cattrike expdition for sale I have had it for probably two years and it's been sitting for a very long time and it's just collecting dust ax i don't have time to ride it. so i paid 25 hunderd for it new and i put the front finders on it witch was over 2 hundred for the set. It has very low hours on it like new so would like to get .two thousand for it might go a little less on it. Also might do a trade for a street leagel enduro

I was admiring this Bottecchia on Ebay when I noticed something fishy... Both of the brake cables are routed to a single lever!

^ Why "foo"? It's probably a tandem brake lever, maybe set up that way for someone with an injury to their right hand. Looks like a rather cool bike.

It is a cool bike, and the lever looks like the sort that would have come with it stock when it had two. It seems likely that someone just stuck two cables through one side. Whether that's because of an injury or not, it still looks weird.

Front wheel needs adjusting . . . makes left turns just fine!

Also "a few quirks," but it's the "right now" that kills me.

I built a similar rig (for a motorcycle- using the foot brake cable- since the left cable was for the clutch) for a friend after he badly broke his right hand hitting a mailbox that hung over the road by a foot. Works, but unpredictable results when you slam the brakes hard!

Adaptive cycling to the fore! We installed similar setups for customers and the owner's bike used a barcon and a thumbie on the right side of an upright bar due to weakness on his left side. You do what you gotta do.

Indeed the description says "Has a tandem brake lever to provide for equal braking power on both wheels."

Well this is a strange ad. You don't suppose they're selling something other than bicycles here, do you?

You could write to the person and tell them that you prefer to make your bicycle purchase transactions in front of the local police station.

Only if the front and rear brakes are correctly adjusted and somewhat synchronized. Without that tuning all it does is provide the means to actuate front and rear brakes simultaneously with one hand.

I'm not even sure what the laws are regarding such things. Honestly, the ad is kind of quaint since they usually just come right out and say what it is they're selling.

You didn't mention the location. Oregon, Washington, or Colorado?

I think Street sellers may well be illegal due to presumably skirting regulation and taxes. I suppose it depends on the weedy source. But, I think for the most part they're ignored in the POT states. At least I've noticed apparently a lot more tolerance since legalization.

Of course, I'm way too fat and it's way too small for me to ride, so it wouldn't ever be a consideration.
I agree with the green handlebar tape, and then white hoods.

I did that type of bar wrap with the old Benotto celo tape on a chrome frame track bike. It looked better since the entire bike wasn't as busy as this one is.

Interesting that the seller selected a photo of a HeadShok bike for the ad, assuming that it's not really a bike that's for sale.
