Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My first Century complete !

I have been riding the last three years. This year I have really increased my days on the bike to 23 miles five times a week. I have 1600 miles in since May which is more than I rode all last summer. I did a metric century earlier this month with no problems so I took the plunge in did my first group ride on Sunday. I signed up for the Century but was not sure I could do it.

The miles and saddle time did not bother me but oh my lord do I need hill training ! The Sweet Corn Challenge in Richfield,Oh is nothing but hills. And not rolling hills.....just big ugly gluttonous hills. I finished 103 miles in 7 hours and 3 minutes and I am very proud of my 39 year old self. Maybe the hills would not seem so bad had I trained better but I did make it. Cannot wait until next year's ride!

My saddle did not bother me but behind my right knee where I have had a bakers cyst is sore. I was going to ride today but decided I had better rest a day. Im planning on a 45 miler tomorrow morning if my knee loosens up a bit.

Congrats on your accomplishment!! A hard earned honor in deed. I am a wee bit older than you, no doubt heavier, and have set the metric century as a personal goal for this summer and a full century for next summer. I'm close and going for it. Again-Congratulations!!

It took me 3 summers to do a metric and then a century in the same month so I know what you mean.

Im a novice, newbie cyclist even after three seasons. Im slow and my bike handling skills arent so good. If I can do a metric than anyone can. The century I rode was way beyond my hill climbing capacity but I pulled it off. If I can do it than you can. Trust me !
