Man's got a point.

That photo's from 2008, which was my second winter of cycling.

Between the snow, studded snow tires, heavy Lake winter cycling boots, and sustained headwinds in the 20s with gusts to 45, yesterday's commute kept me at or near Max HR for nearly the entire trip for an average speed of 11.72 MPH. Man, my quads are killing me today.

And yes, I love it. Especially come March, on the first club ride of the season. One year, I out-climbed a Cat 3 racer, who upon reaching the top where I was waiting, promptly puked over the bars.

Of course, that only lasts until they catch up in late April. Come May, I'm the one yelling, "Hey, wait for me!"

I'm learning to enjoy - OK, tolerate - winter riding. One thing I've noticed is that I feel a bit "fragile" after a ride, as if I would catch a cold if someone in the next block sneezed. It also seems to just take more out of me in the winter, so I'm keeping my ride to less than 2 hours so far.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

If I am out too long and too cold soaked I get those spastic rigid legs. Neighbours must chuckle when I am walking into the house.

One thing about the riding over here right now--You get wet feet and you have to strip the bike after every ride to check and De-Water the bearings

but at least you don't have to wash the bike after the rides.

But it seems better than the other winter riding

I was out ridiing today the temp was 38f and the sky is bright blue and at these times yes, I love winter riding. Due to narrow roads because snow on the sides I stay on the main road and don't get to go where I can in the warmer months but it was great to be outdoors and riding. I am hoping to start back commuting some time this week(monday) if the roads stay ice free.

TSL has the right attitude, to me, dress and equip your self properly and ride. Granted, we don't get the snow and the ice many of you have to battle, however, it is still cold, damp and windy here on many days. I never want to go back to the levels of unfitness I have experienced in the last decade so I ride when it is feasible to safely ride.

I enjoy riding in the winter just because I am out in the fresh air and that beats a hospital room any way you look at those facts. I just dress in layers with sensible kit for the conditions without spending my entire salary on just one piece of kit.. The adapting to the cold is the same as the things I need do for the sweltering summer weather we get here. I won't stop riding and I don't wish to leave my lifelong hometown and my family.. My riding is a gift to me and appreciate every single opportunity I get to do so. Thankfully my wife and my family support me in this.

Bill

I love riding but winter riding is not my favorite. Not that we have a hard winter. But I just got back fron Colorado Springs and Flagstaff over Christmas and didn't even consider taking one of my bikes.

Yes....but I'm selective. No chilly rain, wet snow, or temps below 30.

Strangely, I love riding in the sleet.... something about the airborne ice pellets 'pinging' a sharp rhythmic tattoo on the bike helmet has a weird appeal.

The snow's a little too deep right now on the rail-to-trails...

But, starting Tuesday it's supposed to be sunny and the temperature is supposed to start climbing up to 50 something by Friday!

Yeah!

... So, why does everybody complain about this Global Warming stuff?

Even though West Texas had a weird snow storm yesterday, the snow stopped about 60 miles from me.

Today we cycled in shorts.

So, yeah, winter cycling is okay down here in CenTX.

I'll go out riding down to about 25 degrees, but unlike TSL I don't have the bike, tires, or other gear for the snow. Nor do I trust drivers when there's fresh snow on the roads. It's fun dialing in the clothing and layering system for winter riding, and great when I get it right. Five degrees one way or the other, or the sun being out, can make all the difference. Half the time I'm either sweating too much or cold. I'll take the sweating over being cold. But really, as Bill said, it's riding and it's all good.

With those tires, fenders and disc brakes, you look all set for the conditions.
