Help a somewhat clueless dude - good deal?
I'm looking to buy a MTB that will get me around town and on the trail. A guy is offering to sell me a Gary Fisher Procaliber (1999) with Deore LX cranks, shifters, and derailleurs (rear derailleurs is XT), Brontrager Race Hub/rim front wheel, Shimano Silent Hub w/ Rhynolite rim rear wheel, Judy XC Long travel front shock, Avid Caliper brakes: 1.9L levers and 2.0 Calipers, Bontrager post...
The concerns:
The frame is slightly beat up -- some scratches, paint peeling near the chain a bit.
-->Not a huge issue, but kind of sad, since it's a nice looking frame.
The shifters weren't catching properly for some of the gears, but the guy put in some lubricant and says they work perfectly now.
-->Is this a quick fix or will it last a long time? Can I do this fairly easily again if I need to?
He's asking $175 for the bike, a pump (got rid of mine with my road bike), and some flat pedals. Think it's a good deal? I know the bike is definitely capable of doing what I want it to do so long as it holds up (particularly the shifters), so that's no problem. I think it seems like a pretty reasonable deal from what I've seen so far, but I figured I'd check out what some of the better-informed people here have to say.
Thanks a ton in advance.

Yea for $175 that sounds like a deal, not bad components... as long as there isn't rust it shouldnt be TOO bad.. Hold off just a bit and get some other opinions though.
Just remember you are buying an 8 year old bike not a new one.

Dude, easiest thing you could probably do with this is just basically go with the guy to a LBS and have it checked out by one of the bike pros. any reasonable seller shouldn't have a problem with this, and you'd have information on all the pros and cons coming straight from a nuetral third parties mouth.
But assuming all is well, yeah that sounds like a pretty good deal. 200 won't get you anything close to that quality new, and the frame can be easily repainted if you so desire, and i doubt you need a whole new set of geers, my guess is just some experienced tweaking with some minor part replacement. i'd say 100 bucks should more than cover any extra expenses you'll have to fork over in repairs, which still doesn't put you at half of what a similar bike would cost. So get it checked out, if the ride's legit, jump on it and ride man!

As long as nothing is bent/worn out/broken adjusting the shifting isn't too hard. For that old of a bike the price isn't too bad.
