Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 705/ computer interface problem

Go to download todays race, and the computer won't recognize the Garmin.

Worked this morning. Normally the Garmin shows up as Garmin/L and easy to open files in Cycling Peaks or upload to Trainright or other websites.

Tonight I get 2 devices , "Removable disc J" or "Removable discLl" Neither will open. Properties show 0 KB

I get messages I need to format drive L, which I don't want to do.

I've rebooted, unistalled the drives, downloaded drivers from Garmin.

WTF?

Sounds like the fie system has corrupted itself. Have you tried doing a soft reset yet and then plugging it back into the PC?

How about the cable? Did you try a different cable or move to another USB port? Have you rebooted your PC?

I'd say with 90% certainty the first suggestion won't do anything, but the 2nd is worth a try, always possible that a USB port has up and died or the controlled has gone and borked itself

Rebooted several times. Installed and uninstalled the Garmin. Did two system restores moving further back in time.

None of that changed anything.

Now today, the computer is recognizing the Garmin fine, and I can open every other file, but I still can't open yesterday's file. Did another ride today and that file is fine.

I could upload yesterday's file to Trainright (the CTS coaching site) which uses training peaks. But only 45 minutes of an over 2 hour ride shows.

On the garmin itself the data all appears to be there.

At this point I'm thinking something in yesterday's file is corrupted preventing other programs from reading it.

merlin: If you can PM or email me the file, I can take a look at it and see if the TCX structure is borked somewhere along the line.

You mean there is a Laps folder with files like Lapxx.dat? One of the lap files is likely corrupted and preventing the TCX file from being created. Try to copy all of the lap files to your hard drive and see if any complain. The one that complains is the problem and will need to be deleted. At that point the next time you plug it in it will construct the TCX. Also you may want to run the disk check tool on it to see if there is any file system corruption.

^ I guess I didn't understand your question. In History on the Garmin, the file shows data by laps (I was using the auto lap feature)

But when I look at it on the computer, the folder "Laps" is empty.

I read back through the posts and realized I missed the part where you said you had a file but couldn't load it. You can read through the direction on my blog at https://www.photoscene.com/kimandstev...rmin-tcx-files to try to fix the file or send it to me (or the other guy, post #7)
