Some recent C-List finds - (bikeporn/diary thread)

Hi all,

So over the past 6 months or so I've had this problem... I am a college student, I work, plus I volunteer at a bike rescue and various other things so I am always too busy for personal projects, but I see bikes on CL with people asking next to nothing relative to what I estimate is their market value and so I make a little time to go snatch them up. Often there is a little work necessary - sometimes less. Most of them I plan on selling eventually but, truth be told, I've sold one bike in the past year. So I gave notice at my job recently in order to focus on my last semester of school this Spring and I plan on doing some serious wrenching between now and winter break on at least a few of the 9 or 10 bikes in my apartment.

Well, I've said in past threads I would "post pics soon" - I am going to make this my project before/after documentary thread which I will update once I accomplish something. But for now, I want to post up some before pics of the bikes as they currently sit in my room. As you can see by my choice of photo shoot location, I am serious when I say this will be a bike porn thread.

1. 198? Centurion Pro Tour 15 (acquired 10/22/12)
Frame was dipped in chrome before painting. Tange Champion #2 tubing. Mid fork eyelets, double eyelets at dropouts. Two waterbottle holders on the DT, makes up for none on seat tube (weird).

Sugino AT crankset

The FD/RD are Suntour Le Tech. Hubs say "Suzue" and are sealed.

Not sure if I'll be able to make these fenders look pretty - they may be replaced.

Missing the badge =(. Tange Levin headset. Dia-compe cantis and levers. SR Champion bars.

If someone could tell me what this wire (seems like speaker wire) is doing pressed through a rubber grommet into the frame...I am intrigued, the owner had it tied around the tube and wrapped over with electrical tape. I don't want to pull it out, just in case. Edit: internally routed wire for a bottom bracket generator - thanks brebla!

2. 199? Trek 1420 road bike (also acquired 10/22/12)
Not much to tell on this - I got a deal on it with the above centurion. It just needs the headset tightened up, I'll go through all the bearings anyway before I pass it on. Just a couple pics...for posterity.

Deore crankset and derailleurs

Modolo bars, aero levers, 105 brakes

3.1987 Cannondale SR-2000 Dura-Ace
Full Dura Ace 7400 group minus the levers and minus the non-drive side crank arm (found a small crack on it after purchasing). I plan on replacing the levers with some aeros and finding a crank arm, polishing every part and seeing what it will fetch on ebay.

4. 1986 Fuji "Team Fuji" (acquired around 10/1/12)
This one's just to show off. It is in NOS condition and all original with the Suntour Sprint group minus the shifters and RD, which is Suntour Cyclone probably from 1986 or 87. Apparently this is right around the time Suntour started trying to compete with Shimano indexing and the original owner swapped out the original friction components after having just dropped a chunk of money on the out of date technology. Anyway, I really like the bike and we are the same age - this one won't be going anywhere.

I just rebuilt the Sprint pedals after

The wheels are a nice compromise between aero and double walled.

I added the light

Even has original bar tape.

5. 1991? Klein Quantum
Not sure if I will complete this one or cannibalize it and part the rest out. It has a mix of components and very poor condition 7400 levers which are too junky to use on the above Cannondale.

3TTT bars and a single campy part (the front brake, which should cover what I paid).

6. 1973 Raleigh Grand Sports (Carlton)
This is the bigger project - I plan on stripping it entirely down, frame saver, touching up paint and polishing as best I can before building it as a city commuter with moustache bars and barcons.
(Gonna update this with pics tomorrow)

regarding the loose wire: It could be "internal wiring for a bottom bracket generator", according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centurion_(bicycle)

I can totally relate re CL deals too good to pass up. I've gotten better at fixing them up and selling, generally to friends for cost of bike+parts. That Pro Tour is just my style.

I admire what you are doing keep at whith experiance it is possible to get some pretty decent cheap CL, coop, or even dumbster salvage builds. This bike was basically a dumbster salvage build that I sold for $160.

I built it just because I wanted to see a Mixte SS with drops for the cool look.
