Hello World from Maritime Canada

Hi folks! Been reading for awhile, joined recently.

I live in a hilly city on the North Shore of the Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada.
I'm 72 now but got back into riding about 6 years ago. After the first summer I
realized I lacked the physical capacity (lower back, hips and knees) to make
any practical use of a bike.

Then I found out a neighbour converted bikes to ebikes so I had him put a kit
on my bike and am now riding every chance I get. Errands, shopping, dr
appointments, visiting friends and family (all within 8km range)
and just plain sight-seeing (Nature Park 4k from my driveway). It's added more
enjoyment to my outdoor photography hobby.

My first bike wasn't worth remembering because it was my trial bike. To see
if I could do the biking. But it served, with the e-kit on, to get me serious
about biking. I bought a new CCM, Equator, front suspension, step-through,
(aluminum), Hard-tail and rode that for two years then last fall I bought a CCM,
Appex, full-suspension, (aluminum). It was easy enough to move the e-kit from
bike to bike.

I had my first accident this summer. I was coasting down a road in a local park.
It was a clear road with slight curves. The surface was pristine. No holes or
cracks. My coasting speed was 32kph (unpowered). Then I hit a hidden,
unmarked speed bump while distracted by the preceeding victim of it. I found
out, after, that he had lost most of his auto's exhaust system.

While flying through the air I had three distinct thoughts First, that my front wheel
had come off. Second, that a small animal, outside my perepheral vision, had
scurried under my back wheel. And third, as the asphalt neared my left brow,
was, damn! I hope my sister finds out I'm dead before my cat starves to death.

I landed on the left side of my skull, cheek, lower jaw and left shoulder hard
enough to jam my insides up against my left lung. Badly skinned my left knee
and elbow. The next day I felt my lung plop back into place when I bent over
for something. Took about two weeks before I was back to normal. It must be
because I drink lots of whole milk that I didn't break anything. It's what amazed
the people who helped me out.

I tell this story to reinforce the message to riders to 'ride with a helmet'. If the
crack I heard when I hit had been on my naked skull, I don't know how that
would have turned out but I'm guessing not so good. What happened to my
cheek and jaw has me, seriously, considering a full face helmet for next Spring.
Not to mention the three bugs in the face this year. Corner, right eye, forehead
and up under the helmet and one on the left cheek. Pilots have problems with
birds, riders have problems with flying bugs.

Just one more thing. A couple of weeks ago I went out and bought this Monster
HD (1920x1080) sport helmet cam. It has added a whole new dimension to riding.
This winter, when I'm missing riding the most, I'll have my rides to watch on my
LG, 55", 3D TV. And being that Cannabis will be legal in Canada by that time, I
guess I'll be watching my videos in 4D!

I have some don'ts, for me, when I'm riding. Don't ride below 4degsC. Don't ride
in the rain. Don't ride at night. Don't, 'ever', assume the other people using the
streets, be they driver, rider or pedestrian, know what they're doing.

The name's Dave Yelle, I AM CANADIAN, ride safe and cya in the forums.

Kewel!

Reading the part about the accident reminded me of flying though the air after a cager cut me off, having a moment to think how much the landing was going to hurt.

Have fun and stay safe!

Thanks! I have to tell you I'm impressed with the cam. For the $100 Cn I paid for it I think I did well. The output is so real! Its' HD capabilities are beyond reason. (1920x1080x120bps). I use 1920x720x30bps and it looks just fine to me on my big-screen TV.

But it has a special battery that will have to be replaced through the mfg. (Not good.) And it can only hold a charge for less than an hour of recording time. 45-55mins.

I bought a 2year, over-the-counter warranty for $20. So I won't worry about the battery and since my rides are normally 20 to 40mins long it just suits my purposes.

It also seems to command some respect for me too. Drivers and pedestrians seem a little more conscious of my presence when they notice the camera sticking out of the top of my helmet.

It's enjoyable to watch the recordings. I'm looking for the things I do right and wrong on the streets. I'm planning a project of the bike lanes in my home town. Proof positive for the city fathers to see that most of our bike lanes are downright dangerous.
