tire / tube size explained please

Could someone please explain the meaning of the numbers on my tires and tubes? I know next to nothing about tires and am trying to figure out which size Mr. Tuffy liners to get.

Tires Info: 40-622 (700X38C - 28X1 5/8 X1 1/2)
Tubes Info: 700 X 35/43C, 27X1 3/8

Any suggestions on which tire liners to get would be appreciate too.

I'm new here by the way!

All the math you need, or can possibly use - concerning tires and tubes - is here:

This is the Mr Tuffy you need, Gold - 700 x 32-41. However Red - 27 x 1 1/4-1 3/8" 700 x 28-35c might do.

After reading that page about tire sizes and then looking at that tuffy page again it all makes since. Thanks for everything.

You are most welcome!
I wish I could take credit for saying something profound, but the truth of the matter is that most questions that will ever come up on the mechanics forum can be answered at two sites:

https://www.sheldonbrown.com

and

https://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQindex.shtml

all newbies should take some time and scour these sites thoroughly - most of your questions will be answered there ;-)

Cheers,

Tube Specifications

Neither Sheldon nor Park actually explain what the numbers for tube sizes mean...

They specify what the tire sizes mean, but not tube sizes.

For example:

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...=Tubes/Sealant

One size for this product is:
"700 x 20/28 SV 32mm"

Clearly 700 refers to the diameter of the wheel, but the other two are less clear.

Does 20/28 refer to tube min/max diameter?
Is 32 mm the valve length?

These seem like reasonable guesses, but I'd like to know for sure.

It would be helpful if someone would explain this.

That is because there isn't an ISO spec for specifying the tube size. you need to look at the numbers and deremine what each number means unless you want to look through each manufacturers datasheets to determine how they label them.
700 x 20/28 - Minimum and maximum tire sizes
SV 32 - Schrader valve 32mm long

Almost no one in Southern Illinois or Central Indiana would refer to your tire size as 622 or 28"; the average man or woman on a bike would say '700', which isn't to say that would be the case in Canada, where I understand people talk about 28" tires.

Look at both of these for price--sometimes one is significantly less expensive than the other. I have had good luck with all things tire/tube at biketiresdirect.com.
