Do you sanitize your bike?

you know, those disinfecting wipes you use for kitchen, bathroom, etc? ummm, several bike surfaces, like saddle, bar & levers, could use some cleaning. I've recently started to do this, but don't know why- not sure what problem I'm solving. Am I wasting time?

Not at all. I did the same in San Sebastien, once. Mind you, I'd had a puncture miles from the hotel, and Sanytol wipes were all I could find to clean me, the chain, the gears etc.

Really handy if you have no access to running water. If you have access to water, soap and a bucket, then it's time to rethink your cycle hygiene philosophy

Well, when I'm drinking and riding, naturally I spill some on me and the bike. I mean, it's not 200 proof, but it's up there since I'm downing it straight. Does that count?

Doesn't everyone own an autoclave big enough to fit their bike in? Better have stainless and titanium everything if you're autoclaving your bike.

Some people scrub down their bikes daily. Others more like monthly or yearly... or when some major component needs replaced (replace chain + clean sprockets & derailleurs).

There are very few diseases that you will catch from yourself. And, the majority of environmental germs are not harmful. Perhaps your biggest risk would be loaner bikes in a bike shop, or something, but even that is minimal.

But wear a bib, of course. Don't wanna get your freshly-ironed white shirt or silk tie dirty. Wear gloves too. or better yet, clean the bike while it's inside a glove box.

I coughed up part of a Clif bar the other day. It landed on my Garmin. When I tried to wipe it off, I somehow switched it off and didnt save my ride data. Keeping things too clean is sometimes more trouble that its worth. 🤔

I actually do use Lysol wipes for a quick wipe down on the bike. For convenience though, not trying to sanitize anything.

There are only two times I clean any of my bikes.
1. When something starts to malfunction.
2. Once a year weather it needs it or not.

I wipe down the spin bike bars & seat after the gym class,

but should really do it before as well.

Occasionally clean some part of the bike with alcohol so I guess the chainstay gets sanitized once or twice a year.

The only time I sanitise my bicycles is when I'm flying overseas with them. Some countries can be a picky about things like a bit of dirt on the tyres.
