here`s my Austro Daimler - Puch. i am not sure about the exact model, but i think it`s a SLE. frame & forks reynolds 531, smoked-chrome. i had the frame for years, and couldn`t decide what to do with it - finally decided to build it up a bit "crossy", with an 7400 dura ace group i had to spare. polished a 7410 crank like an idiot until i recognized the missing BB.....so for the time being, the 7402 will do the job. unpolished.
the frame also required a long arm rearbrake, had a first gen. dura ace left. on the front, the short 7400 fit perfectly, also for safety reasons quite fortunate. the 30mm cross tires were a bit too high, so they would slightly touch the front brake. solved that one with an 3mm adapter in the fork ends -
now the tires fit perfectly.
the adjuster for the sti made of an old shinano 600 shifter-clamp & small parts.
the outers & bar tape in grey - wanted to try something other than always black - looks nice, i think.
seatpost is a campy, at least until i get my hands on a DA.
last thing to do was to "overpaint" the sign on the tires with "Some-Q" .
very satisfied with this build up - rides extremely nice.

are there any experts on "smoked-chrome" around? the chrome on this (CX) is a bit darker as usual, but not as dark as the smoked-chrome from the vent noir II. i have never seen the SLE model in chrome in europe, so i guess it was only on the austro daimler for the us market. the catalogue said tubing 531, fork puch2500 - which differs from the actual frame of my supposed to be SLE..... the model is not really that important to me, but if someone knows more - pls, let know!

Got this Colnago Sprint frame for $200. From what i can find, I think its early 90s. Cannibalized one of my other bikes for parts. The paint is dinged up here and there, but that jsut adds character

Got this frame from the Colonel, a 1983 Gazelle Champion (EU version, "Mondial" missing). It's been built with a Shimergo set up: 8-speed Record brifters, Campy 9-speed pre-2001 Veloce long cage RD, Sunrace 7 speed +1 cog rear cassette on Easton Circuit wheelset
The complete bike including pedals, seat bag, pump and water bottle cage weighs 24lbs 2oz, not a light build by any stretch, but, it climbs pretty well. The hills around here can be pretty brutal so it's a triple, adding even more weight. Rides nice with a 531C Reynolds frame.

Yeah, that's the rub: just had back surgery and my legs are short for my height
The bike set up is pretty good for me, I can maintain an average speed of 15mph on my 19 mile hilly course. Not bad for a guy with an 80 year old's back (according to the surgeon)!

Now that is impressive! I figured the setup was like that for some reason like that.. but I really do hate that stem. Strangely enough to my eye, those eastons look great on there though! What saddle is that? I like it.

It's a Brooks Professional, an older one, with very thick leather. It works for me very well. A lot better than a plastic butt-hatchet. Thanks for the comments!

the shimano stuff actually works with your frame.
the way I feel about the "octopus crank" era of shimano may be similar to how I felt about old 80's era Mercedes Benz Cars. When i was a little kid seeing one (compared to the 80's BMWs) I thought they were ugly but knew they were great cars regardless. But now I'm in my 30's when I see a well maintained 80's Mercedes (especially those diesels) I think they are beautiful and know they are great cars (because they are still running 25+ years later). the octopus shimano crank is actually starting to grow on me.... but the new "starfish" SRAM Red cranks? YUCK!
the thing I love about this thread is how in a sense we are recycling old bikes. it just makes sense all around, from an environmental aspect, economic aspect, and aesthetic as well.

Oh and the new Dura Ace 900 cranks are incredibly awful too. The asymmetry just drives me batty.

Ironman Expert... Vice Vice Baby!
Here is my contribution to the thread (and a direct result of the previous ump-teen dozen pages of beautiful rides).
I bought this bike new when I was in High School back in 1989 and gave it to my Uncle when I left for the Army. Just recently my Uncle mentioned that it had just been hanging in the garage idle for the last six years and I of course felt compelled to rescue it!
Just completed today... removed all the 1050 105 group (except the head set) and upgraded to Ultegra 6500. I originally intended to use white Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels, but lucked into a set new Ksyrium SLs at a price that couldn't be resisted. I'm not sure how I feel about the red hubs and spoke on this bike, but the wheels are so nice that I'm having trouble yanking them off!
AND OF COURSE, MUCH GRATITUDE TO ROBBIETUNES FOR HIS GUIDANCE AND ADVICE!!!
