Bike rental abroad - bag ideas for getting gear there

Discovered renting bikes with panniers in Portugal for self-guided touring is my idea of heaven - friendly, rural, delicious and affordable!

Last year we paid $100 for the rental agency to forward our empty duffels to the finish but I would like to invest in super light duffels or backpacks we would carrier in our pannier for the tour.

Any suggestion? I have seen tourers use Asian shopping bags to transport their panniers but I would like a bag I could carry more easily.

I use military C bags. They pack small when empty, are durable and hold a lot

Thx. Might not pass discount airline carry on restrictions though.

Get the Sea to Summit "Travelling Light" bags.

The blue one is the duffel bag and the purple one is the backpack ... in 2012 colours. That's when we got them, and we still use them.

How much stuff are you carrying? 2 panniers worth, 4? Lots of lightweight nylon duffel bags available that will fold up compactly. Eagle Creeek makes a variety of bags that may meet your requirements. Our last bike trip to europe we only cycled for about half the time so we had non-cycling clothes we didn't want to carry while riding the rental bikes so the rental company took care of them for us.

Is there any risk of those mini duffels exploding on an airplane? Get either clothes coming down the conveyor if you're unlucky, or a box if you're lucky.

Never used their bags, but I love the products of theirs that I do own. I have their Comfort Lite SL insulated air mattress. My favorite mattress ever. I also have their collapsible bowl and cup. Great additions to my camp kitchen. Gone are the relatively bulky Lexan bowl and cup. When collapsed, they next inside of each other and slip into the narrow inside space of one of my Ortlieb Sport Packer pannier.

We used them during the 8 months we travelled around the world in 2012, and many times since. I think they've gone in checked baggage, but I know they are small enough to use for carry on.
