I do sort of agree that there are bikes that maybe should be left alone, and those where it does not matter so much. I've made that decision with the two bikes I've converted, or left alone, ie,
1978 Nishiki Superbe: left alone, beautiful parts, an interesting example of when Japanese bikes were starting to get really good,
1982 Team Miyata: get rid of all of that old Dura Ace, are you kidding?
1987 Davidson: converted to 7 speed STI, I bought it as a frameset, so what's the difference?
1987 Miyata 912: converted to 7 speed STI, the original indexed Shimano 600 DT shifters were junk/worn out, it's a middle-of-the line bike and nothing special
1993 Bridgestone RB1-7: left alone, because you couldn't make it any better.
Bottom line is if you own it, do what makes you happy!

My 1983 Gran Turismo. It's my main commuter when it's not raining. It all started when I test fit a set of 8 speed C'dale hybrid rims. I kind of got hooked into modernizing it. Kind of a Frankenstein but rides nice. Deore LX derailleurs from the mid nineties. Serfas Vida tires. Left shifter is an RSX triple. Right is an RX100 8sp.. The appearance is close enough to not look silly. I am thinking about making them as identical as possible though. Zoom bars, Cinelli stem and wrap. The trunk bag is an 80's C'dale that came with the Trek 520 I got a month or so ago. I enjoyed riding it before, but the stem was WAY too long. Now it fits me to a T, and shifts perfectly.,,,,BD

"Jours," you're right, my girlfriend's Bianchi will never be reunited with the Suntour Cyclone group I pulled off a wrecked Raleigh (frame had buckled), and the bike is better for it.
The myth that "hipsters" (people who are younger than you, and therefore threaten you and deserve derision) are chopping up 50s Cinellis is absurd. Even if it were true, it would have no place in this thread, because very few changes here are permenant and I presume most of us kept the old parts group in a box somewhere.
Equally absurd is the idea that people out there are selling off their pantographed 3Rensho seatpost when they convert their old 3Rensho to STI. I haven't seen any examples of this and I would be extremely surprised if anyone who cared enough about their bike to update it to "modern" componentry would be so callous about a rare, original and still completely usable component. Your analogy is flawed further when you consider that that 3Rensho post, when sold on eBay, is almost certainly going to another 3Rensho owner who lacks a pantographed seatpost. I don't think that the winning bidders are buying them for scrap metal.

I'm wondering if every component on every bike owned by "six jours" is original.
If it's not (even if they are just saddle, pedals, or even bar wrap changes) then he's guilty of the sin of "updating" a bike for his own pleasure or comfort. It's all just a "matter of degrees" you know, and that's a very slippery slope for him to start down.
Since any change is wrong, no matter how small, and if he's guilty of doing what he's been charging everyone here of doing, then I'm afraid he should be knocked off his bike.....and run over.

My completed 3rensho , I wanted to go with Delta brakes but I think I'll be fine with the Dura-Ace. I had to give the Veloflex a try , plus, for some reason they were less expensive than the other colors ! Btw these tires are a PITA to install.
Lots of yellow to digest but it grows on you.

Just did a quick loop around the block. Very nice a fast ride with those high pressure tires , I'll need a longer ride to assess the quality of the ride though. The tires won't stay yellow for long though.

built up my uncle's old trek 560 with 9 speed 105. i like the ride, but the frame is too big for me (its a 61, i normally ride a 57 or 58) but since it was free, i can't complain. i will probably put the stock parts back on it and let my brother use it. its a comfy bike, and im looking for another similar trek in my size.
